Congratulations Glenn on a great article!

Congratulations to Glenn Dawes for his spirited support of Southern Hemisphere skies in the excellent article "North v South" in the July edition of Sky at Night (now on sale in Oz).

This is a great read if you like a bit of humour and good-natured banter (combined with good information), as the two 'heavyweights' Glenn Dawes and Paul Money slug it out in the "Battle of the Hemispheres"!

Needless to say, Glenn wins!

Cheers -

Thanks Rob and Andrew,

It was a lot of fun writing the article. In my preliminary discussions with Paul I even told him he could have Orion, even though the Great Neb is technically south, he needed all the help he could get! We all know which is the better hemisphere. Even on their website forum:

http://forum.skyatnightmagazine.com/tm.asp?m=69415

a person was questioning whether Paul had even seen the Southern skies. In writing for S@N I am always under stress to keep the word count down and there was one comment of mine that hit the cutting room floor which I thought was one of the my killer blows - we can see most of what Paul was claiming was so great in the north anyway, we have the best of both. They also cut out a mention I made to the Herald Bobroff Charts. I believe these are the ultimate guidebook to the Magellanic Clouds.

Btw, I think anyone can contribute to their forum, if any IISers would like to put in a comment supporting the south.

Regards

Glenn

Onya Glenn, and a verry nice corrected map Eric
Tho it still has one error on it.....
Why does a compass magnet's north pole point toward the earths north pole if two norths or two souths are supposed to repel?
Because Earths north pole is actually magnetically south!!!!

So.... that map is correctly orientated, tho the compass should still have 'N' as up.

Hi David,

Well done and well written! We'll just keep on rubbing it in to our poor photon deprived northern cousins!

Ah, S Hem wins on the forum too! Having nothing to support their arguments, they've been reduced to jibes about our convict ancestry, poor fellas LOL!

Well done Rob, I've read your entries on their site and I'm pleased you are getting into them. Unfortunately attacking us from the convict angle is all they have left - we have everything else, better views of the universe, better weather, longer nights (in the months that count - our winter Milky Way), we know how to play cricket and even had to show them how to win medals at the Olympics, the list goes on.

When it comes to the poms take no prisoners!

Actually I take my hat off to S@N for having such a debate (I'm not saying this just because I did the article). I've never seen the other northern astro mags do something like this probably because they are afraid they would lose - big time.

Regards

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

The US magazine Astronomy did a North versus South comparison in their June 2000 issue.

Greg
