First Light

First Light for the Vixen VC200L, Modified Canon 40D, and QHY5 Guider.

It is a full moon but I just had to get it all working.

8 x 10minute subs at 400iso. Darks, bias and flats applied.

Stars are just starting to egg and it is a little out of focus to boot.

This is a full frame image ... not cropped.

Replaced original image with a reprocessed one.

looks great mate... try again during the new moon cycle! however I know what its like, new toys always demand a first try regardless of the conditions... I tried a 5x powermate in an 8" scope with pretty raggedy seeing last night JUST to see what the image scale would be like.

Cheers eric, it's a bit better going tonight, got a few of M8 and 20 earlier on which are looking ok so far. Maxim is doing the darks etc now. Gotta love the sequencer in maxim when it's cold out there

Added a reprocessed image kindly done by Eric.
I obviously need some help with photoshop magic.

holy crap... nice reprocess.

Robin, at least now you know the data was good... and considering the full moon and first light, you'd have to be stoked with that image

Well done on the capture, and Eric, well done on the processing.

Very Nice Robin, I am thinking along the same lines for my next scope.
Can you tell me where you bought it and what the damage was. Nearly have enough put together for the purchase.

Well done Focal length looks good with plenty of detail.

Full moon high in the sky as well Doug.
I bought it here recently, it will be in archives. Astro Optical quoted $1750 + delivery for a new one and the reducers are just under $300. AO wanted $4300 for the VCM260L if you want bigger

I've attached a couple from last night. Still fiddling with them.
There is a lot more of M8 with a modified canon than with a standard one.
This one is cropped a bit for framing.

Great images Robin, especially the last two with M8 and M20.
Did you take them at full FL or with a focal reducer.

I cant wait till my VC200L with a reducer arrives. I've got everything ready for it, including all adapters for my QHY8 and a electric focuser.

All done with the reducer Mike under a full moon, but the images appear flat to the edge with no coma and almost no vignetting, compared to the DOB. Some of those gradients the DOB produced where hard to remove, for me anyway

Thought I might try a few without the reducer at Astrofest under dark skys, I figure if I can get 10minutes out of the heq5pro here, I'll should get 5minutes out of it at Astrofest for shooting at F9.

Still fiddling with the last 2 in Photoshop and it was looking like rain again here so no more for a while

How does that adapter attach? Does it screw into the Vixen 60mm job that comes with the reducer ?

cleared up nicely here for me Robin... I've been out since 7:30 with Jupiter on the CCD

The moon rising later tonight would have been a good chance to collect more M83 data..

yeah, it should be flat, that what's the beauty of this scope :-)

I hope the weather will be fine when my VC200L arrives. It's not good at all these days with clouds and wind almost everyday.

I am playing with my older images too. Here is my last Eta Carina and M8 re-processed.

The adapter screws into a 60mm adapter supplied with the reducer. I uploaded a diagram from Peter here and it explains how all parts are connected.

I've decided to order a 2" noise piece from Peter too as the one I've got from Bintel has longer M42 thread than QHY8 42mm female can accept. Just want all pieces of imaging train to be connected tight.

Also here is a first light taken with a second hand VC200L by some guy who is a member of VC200L yahoo group. It seems there is a problem with collimation but it's still a very good picture in my opinion.

Mike - I like your Eta reprocess! there seems to be a slight gradient from left to right that goes about 1/8th of frame... Have you attempted to remove that with Gradient eXterminator?

Other than that its a ripper image... The other dudes one of the bubble is sensational also.. but you are correct, there seems to be a slight collimation issue present..

(sorry to go off topic in your thread Robin.)

Back on topic, the last of the 3 images you posted earlier (M20) is a real ripper mate! the blue reflection neb is showing through nicely and there is great detail in the red section at the front.

nice, the trifid is very colourful, I like it. The Lagoon is a tad orange though... M83 turned out well for you as well!
