New 12" Dobs

Well Folks, after much deliberation as to what to buy, (12', 10", 8" or largish refractor), I decided to go for the 12". It arrived yesterday, put it together in a jiffy, collimated the laser collimator and then the Dobs. The power of these scopes is incredible, especially after the little 4.5" I have been using for so long. Anyway had a look at quite a few things last night, all my favourites, M104, Centaurus A, M57 etc etc etc, and last but not least was Jupiter. I was amazed at how clean and crisp the views were, and I caught the shadows of two moons at the same time crossing the planet. One of the moons which was making one of the shadows must have been transitting as well but I failed to pick that up. I didn't do any obs reports, last night was just getting the feel of it as it is pretty damn big compared to what I am used to. I will have to spend some time now and go back over all my obs reports with the new scope and right new ones for each object. Anyway just wanted to share the excitement. Woo Hoo!!!!!!!

Good one Rex!

If I was starting out again and was limited to one scope, it would be a 12"er for sure.

I did the same thing, went from a 4.5" to a 12" GSO dob. I was blown away with the amount of detail I was seeing. Have fun with it and I hope you get clearer nights then what I have been getting.

Congratulations Rex, sounds good! Although I am very sorry to have lost you from the aperture-challenged brigade...

Cheers -

Thanks everyone, now i just have to wait for all this damn cloud to go away, so I can give it second light. I suppose I can't complain atleast I got one clear night in. But its August, it is almost always clear this time of year, so here's hoping it doesn't stay long. Atleast it gives me a little time to think about where I'm going to keep it, my misses wants her side of the bed back.
