Arrow Trails of Orion Rising

Hi all

This image was taken this morning, between 2am and 5:30am. It's 20 x 10 minute exposures looking towards the East over the Pacific Ocean, from our Planetary Imaging camp at Nambucca Heads, NSW.

Canon 350D on a fixed tripod, 20x 10 minute exposures, f/3.2 with a 17-70mm sigma lens @ 17mm, ISO200. 1 dark. Stacked in startrails.de.

Orion can be seen rising in the middle of the picture. Taurus and the Pleiades are over on the left, and Mercury has just risen above the horizon below Taurus.

A 1200px wide version can be seen on my gallery:
Trails of Orion Rising

Thanks for looking.

I love star trail photos! Very nice. I think it's cool that this was taken looking East over the Pacific. I have to look West to look over the Pacific. I think it's cool because it illustrates how the small the world's become thanks to the internet.

Thanks guys. When setting up for the shot I was imaging the star trails rising straight up, but of course on reflection that would only happen at the equator.

These "straight" trails rise up at 60deg due to being taken at 30deg S latitude (90 - 30).

Thats a really nice photo.
I found myself just looking at it for ages, picking the stars of Orion out one by one.
Lovely colour in the trails as well.

Well done.

Nice trails Mike. A bit different from the usual circular ring of trails. The trees frame it well.
