M8 Lagoon neb. 14hrs of HaRGB, up close

Hi Guys

Well, this is at about my patience limit, after 10 hrs odd of processing effort .

I think its the best pic ive done so far, as smooth and noise free as I can get it without the usual hardcore processing. The stars are still not perfect, but at least they dont get in the way here, which suits this object.

This is one of those pics you can zoom in on and get lost in the many and varied 3D cloud formations.

Im keen to see how it presents on you guys LCDs, does it size properly, and click-zoom appropriately?. Is the colour OK?

M8 Lagoon Nebula in HaRGB total 14hrs exposure time.
3nm Ha 11hrs (33 off 20min subs bin1); RGB each 1hr ( 12 off 5min subs bin2)
Taken on a Meade 12" LX200R OTA, G11, ST10XME. Ha at f10 and RGB 6.7 (scaled)

Hi Fred, this one is awesome. The depth that you have captured within the nebulosity is wonderful with a real 3D feel about.

I'm amazed with those billowing folds of nebulosity, they really make the image.

A fine effort and I'll have to one of your best to date.

Cheers

Fred, Most excellent work. Exquisite details. I was amazed at the Ha data alone, but the RGB data has taken this image to the next level. I true imaging feat indeed. Bugger the stars, just clone them out. At this focal length and use of a small bandpass NB filter, you trying to maximise/focus on nebulosity details, not capturing "pretty" stars. This is what imaging is all about, to capture the essence of a target delivering an unforgettable view. I have tried, but continually fail. Hat goes off to you. Well done.

That is the most extraordinary shot of M8 I've ever seen. Its sooooo 3D, you can actually see the cloud convolutions and how this gas can collapse to make stars. Awesome

Excellent image Fred.

The processing doesn't look overcooked.

Fred that is a unique view of the Lagoon. Different to any other that I have seen. the convolutions are amazing. My first impression is that your processing has contributed to these apparent "details" but because I haven't seen anything like this before..?... I can't really tell.

Anyway a great visual image all the same, well done

Mike

Hi Fred,

Yes Fred a masterpiece and well done. I agree this is your best work and is a startling good image. I have never seen so much detail in the Lagoon and actually the Lagoon often is a somewhat unpleasant image due to the brownish stars nearby and the residual gas making the area look an odd colour. Your Ha RGB blows through that and concentrates on the interesting part of the neb itself which is the cloudlike folds in the gas.

I agree with Jase, if the stars annoy you then healing brush them out (by the way Jase you are being a bit hard on yourself I think, you have some stunning images).

ST10 is an awesome Ha camera. And what a great ad for the Meade OTA. What a performer.

The only way I could see this image being improved is if you layered in some real short exposures to get those bright stars in the centre resolved.

And if the stars are anooying you why don't you layer in a short RGB exposure of the stars only - Russell Croman has done this to good effect on his Lagoon Nebula image.

Greg.

Best image of the M8 core I've seen to date. And with that gear at that focal length! Most excellent.

Gee, thanks guys, your comments are much appreciated, makes the effort worth it.

Mr B, the 3D effect just emerged, I was lucky this time

Ric, "fine" is the key, a change from artifact city for me.

Thanks Jase, The 3nm Ha, pretty much squashed the stars by itself, it was hard making the RGB monsters fit tho, the rest just dissappeared.

Allan, sheesh, thank you, glad you like it.

Steve, well, theres a fair bit of processing, deconvolute mainly, but I think I avoided "ovecooked".

Mike, thanks, I was aware of the possibility of processing adding detail, but I added deconvolute to several test subs to the Ha in increasing amounts (the main processing used) and it didnt seem to effect it too much.

Greg, yes, the stars were annoying to start with, im glad I got away with them dissappearing. I had a look at Cromans effort zoomed in to the same FOV, and although he does resolve the "hourglass" very well, detail generally is not that flash. Im about done with M8 now, I imaged the hourglass with a powermate, and its very saturated anyway. Maybe next season Ill layer some lower exposure subs, I feel like moving on now.

Thanks for the feedback Rob, I can only go by other gurus reference efforts on the same LCD, which is not a bad "calibration" actually, im glad it looks good on your calibrated LCD.

Cheers Bill, Im beginning to think the next most important gear after the mount is the camera, the LX200R OTA appears to cut it methinks

Thanks Alex, well, its not such a deep image outer-neb wise, but the 3D sort of depth in the middle came out well.

Fred ..that is one of the finest shots of the lagoon I have ever seen..and it stayed incredibly smooth at full res..b*****y h**l, it doesnt even look like any lagoon shot I have ever seen before

IMHO you have just taken DSO imaging to a new level

BTW I am on a CRT not LCD monitor

Magnificent image Fred. Certainly very smooth and very subtle in your processing. The detail and 3D effect astonishing

Looks fine on our CRT and LCD monitors. Size perfect and click up zoom OK.

As Greg already mentioned it sure is a masterpiece
