After a few days of cloud and rain finally a clear night! The seeing was not perfect, but I did find some good conditions around 2.40am, just before the fog rolled in and ended the imaging.

The 3 red spots are getting closer, but more slowly than was predicted. Seems like they just don't want to get too close :-)

Here's an interesting illusion - compare this image to the one above. They're identical apart from the orientation, and yet I see more vivd colours in this one. I guess it's because the eye prefers to scan left to right and sees more detail then in the up/down direction?

mmm, prediction is for cloud tonight, but I'll try again anyway. Jupiter is close to max size now, It's difficult to keep it on the ccd while capturing, there's only about 30 pixels to spare top and bottom.

Thanks Alex. The image scle comes from a combination of long focal length and resampling before processing. I'm using a 5x powermate with some extra extension to make it almost 8x, for a focal length of about 14m.

Before I process the images in registax I resample them up by 1.5x, this gives registax the ability to do "sub pixel" alignments on larger images, definitely worth doing on images like these that have nonlinear distortions.

There's a bit of sampling theory around somewhere that shows you can gain some detail by upsampling before combining, I think 1.5x is about as far as it's worth going.

That gives me a final image that's about 650 pixels across, and I generally scale it down to about 550 or so after I'm done before posting.
