Thanks Alex. The image scle comes from a combination of long focal length and resampling before processing. I'm using a 5x powermate with some extra extension to make it almost 8x, for a focal length of about 14m.
Before I process the images in registax I resample them up by 1.5x, this gives registax the ability to do "sub pixel" alignments on larger images, definitely worth doing on images like these that have nonlinear distortions.
There's a bit of sampling theory around somewhere that shows you can gain some detail by upsampling before combining, I think 1.5x is about as far as it's worth going.
That gives me a final image that's about 650 pixels across, and I generally scale it down to about 550 or so after I'm done before posting.
