Computer screen night vision software

Hi All

Can anyone recommend a software utility that will make my laptop screen change to a decent night vision mode....something that would give the screen a nice red tint maybe?

I have cranked down the brightness as far as it will go but it still is to bright for night work.

I have also tried making filters to go over the screen but find that it takes to much detail from the images.

I run Tasco SkyWatch ( I think that's it's name, poor cousin of The Sky ) in the background in night vision mode which makes the whole computer change to night mode, predominently red hues. I use it to keep track of the sky as well ofcourse.

p.s. I like the look of DarkAdapted ( FREE ) ... downloading it now ! Thanks for the link John ! I also like the look of the Tool Kit Peter, crosshairs .... very handy .... will get that as well !

for some reason my laptop doesn't like it when i change it to night vision, but I just set it's standby down a and it black out after a couple on minutes plus it is covered over to prevent stray light getting anywhere near the scope.

Thanks Guys

The Imagers Toolkit is the go.

I tried Dark Adapted but it caused a lot of artifacting on my laptop.
