When I subscribed to AS&T in June, they had a competition where in 100 words or less, you had to describe your most memorable moment under the night sky.
The 1st place won an 8" newt on an EQ5, runners up (6) got an AS&T polo shirt.
Well, got a letter in the mail yesterday to say that my entry was judged a runner up. Would've loved the telescope but the shirt will come in handy too
For interest, here's my entry:
Quote:
I'd been into astronomy and owned by 10" dob for a few months, but attending SPSP 2005 at Ilford was my first truly dark site experience.
And dark skies they were! The milkyway glowed overhead and the anticipation of the nights viewing ahead of us was palpable. Using 12mm and 16mm Naglers, my newly fitted DSC's and an ArgoNavis computer, we jumped from one galaxy to the next, from nebulas to globular clusters and everything in-between.
The Leo Triplet of galaxies in the same FOV, the Sombrero Galaxy, Comet C/2005 A1 next to 47Tuc and a bright orange fireball streaking across the SE sky were the highlights of the night, but nothing will beat the memory of seeing the galaxy NGC1566 in Mike Kerr's 25" servocat driven dob. The spiral structure and the arms of the galaxy glowed brightly against the dark skies of Wiruna.
What a sight! One I'll never forget!
