Hi all, I was just reading this on Universe Today, as to what it may be is anyones guess at the moment.

They have been searching for more than 50 years for this object in our galaxy.
It's all very intriguing.

The truth is out there ...
Hi All,
Trying to put two and two together I think the important clues might be:
In our galaxy (they didn't say solar-system)
*Chandra* plus ground-based observations
Searching for 50 years
Chandra observes at x-ray wavelengths so that almost certainly discounts anything in our solar-system and in all probability it has something to do with a bright, compact x-ray emitting object like a neutron star, neutron star binary or black hole/singularity or magnetar?
Neutron star binaries are very, very rare but also emit x-rays and are an important lab for physicists to study gravity. Could it be proof of gravity waves and the speed of gravity? Hmmm ...
50 years ago -- that roughly coincides with the first spaceflights. _One_ important discovery back about then was Cosmic Rays -- maybe connected? Maybe not. Dunno
My guess (boring!) is an intermediate mass black-hole in our Galaxy _or_ ironclad proof of Sagittarius A*'s nature as a supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way.
But who knows?
Slartibartfast's signature on the glacier?
An effective way to prevent pilling on clothing? (No, we've been searching for the answer to that one for much longer than 50 years)
A way for NASA/Astronomers to extract more funding out of the government?

Seriously, intermediate mass black hole I'd reckon.

What have astronomers been looking for now for over 50 years??
An unlimited budget to buy more astrogear of course!
Put me down for a million or so, I bet I can find a way to spend it.

well, in my efforts to unravel the mystery of this involved a very complex... blah blah blah, I typed words in google.
I come out with this as possibility.
Detected the magnetosphere of a planet not in our solar system. Out of all the speculations I've read this one hasn't been mentioned.

If it's supposed to be an object they've been looking for, for over 50 years, then it's not a black hole or a neutron star, because neither of those types of objects were seriously looked at, or for, until the mid to late 60's... and for a start, X-ray astronomy was in it's infancy in the 70's. Although, I maybe wrong...it might be the combined efforts of astronomers over 50 years and not just the specific way of observing.
Knowing NASA, it'll probably something completely underwhelming and mundane, to the point of it being a complete non event. Just a typical beat up to justify an announcement they'd be better of publishing in the next issue of Physics Letters, JoA or AAJ.

Oh havent you guys heard yet? They found the guinea pig powering the galaxy  they think its one of many! its called the 'guineapig on a string' theory

My choice is that they have found a earth like planet with atmosphere to support life and only a few light years away.
Nothing like being optimistic.

I could have sworn recently I came across something stating something along these lines... at least that they had found an earth like planet (not sure about any more details). But if I've already heard about it does that mean it's effectively ruled out of being this "great announcement" as it's already been put out into the public domain?
But otherwise yes my guess is for earth like planet.

funny how the Poms have just released thier secret UFO files and the Vatican just gave the okay to believe in aliens.
The timing of all 3 events makes for some good guessing.
It's probably something boring like a dead monkey carcass they shot into orbit 50 years and wondered where the hell it got to
