Cloud Animation

Today I tried the time lapse settings of the Envisage software that came with the DSI Pro and what better subject than some fast moving clouds.

This video was made by taking one frame every 10 seconds for a period of 1 hour. Blaze Media Pro was used to convert the BMP files into an AVI file. Unfortunately, the act of uploading it to YouTube has made it a little blocky. I have yet to work out how people get their videos to look so good on YouTube.

The thing I found fascinating was the higher level clouds seem to have a wave motion to them. At first I thought it might be something to do with the camera, but the streetlight in the shot doesn't exhibit the waving motion. It is best observed in the latter half of the video when the lower level clouds clear away. (Actually the effect is a lot clearer in the original footage. YouTube spoils it )

Here is the link to the video on YouTube:

Cool. The wave motion is not unusual. The air stream bounces up and down after crossing a mountain range. If the conditions are right, this leads to the formation of lenticular clouds.
