EQ5 spruce up

Anyone know how to get rid of or dissolving the original clear thick lubricant on a eq5, it makes a mess and what is recommended as a replacement.

Using a degreaser does not work.

Some kerosene? I can't remember what I used on the ones I did, it was too long ago

Any generic silicon grease should do the job, it doesn't have to be fancy.

I used kerosene to remove the old grease on my VIxen mounts.
I re-greased one with a white lithium grease, the other I used BP LS-EP2 grease which is lithium based.

I used paint thinner to remove the old sticky grease and then I regreased with Castrol boating grease, it's a lithium based grease though it doesn't look white. I found it at Supercheap Auto. The mount now it's really smooth.
unfortunately I have some electronic or electric problems at the moment

Try SHELLITE it strips the old grease quite easily.

No they're not. When the mount is pulled apart for cleaning, all the electronics are taken off.

I used something called "Solvent Degreaser" which I got from Repco for $9.95. Worked just fine.

Thanks guys, used kero and it workd a treat. I also removed the o rings and end brass pieces and replaced them with 11 x 6 x 3mm roller bearings. One of your members suggested this. Rotation is nice and smooth now.
Next step is grease and then turn it into a goto. Anyone got any meade lxd motors.

I've had my mount for longer than 12 months so I decided to give this a go now my warranty's passed .

Well the article made it look harder than it was turned out to be dead easy, anyone who has done their own tune up or changed brake pads or built models would find this simple.

Only sticky problem is getting the ring nuts off which you may need a special tool for if they are on too tight.

Removed the old grease with engine degreaser (spray can), mineral turps and toothbrush.

I used a Telflon grease to replace the existing stuff if you can't get lithium grease it's a good alternative.

My mount didn't have that many rough spots so cleaning them up with a bit of wet and dry sandpaper was all that it took.
