HEQ5 Pro

Hi All,
Can anyone advise me as to whether or not i need an RS232 to USB conversion connector to run this mount from an ASUS F3series Laptop.
Duo core T8100, 2GB Ram, 250GB HD, external 320GB HD. This Laptop only has USB ports, it does have a couple of others but they are smaller in size to RS232.
Cheers,
Duncan

New laptops do not generally come with serial ports any more, so you will most likely need to purchase an RS232 to USB converter

Thanks Nick. I thought that would be the case but it begs the question why not have both connections on mounts?
Cheers,
Duncan

You don't need a USB to RS232 convertor, but you can use one.

I bought one of these http://apple.clickandbuild.com/cnb/s...dCategoryID=47 as linked from the EQMod website, and attached an RJ45 plug on the end. The wiring configuration is also on the EQMod website.

I believe there is an online store down south somewhere in Australia now that sells them too.

I asked the same question here about three years ago when I first got into this hobby and the general concensus was that the reason serial is used instead of USB is that you can run much longer runs with serial than with usb.

Seems to me the needs of the few outway the needs of the many in this case.

Some RS232 to USB adapters are better than others

I have a keyspan adapter that works and 4 or 5 others that don't.
Gary at http://www.wildcard-innovations.com.au/contact.html sells them
