Talking First Light with the 450D

All I can say now is "I'm hooked!”.

After a long wait for all the equipment to arrive and waiting for clear skies, I finally had an opportunity to get my feet wet in some DSO imaging. So under an almost full Moon I got a chance to test out the new camera and equipment. The seeing was good and there was a mild breeze around.

All images were taken with my Celestron 8SE SCT f/6.3 1260mm on a Alt-Az mount and Canon 450D at ISO 1600. Stacked in DSS and processed in PS CS3.

So here they are,

1. M42 – 4 x 30sec exposures
2. Eta Carinae – 1 x 30sec exposure
3. Jewel Box – 1 x 30sec exposure
4. Omega Centauri – 1 x 30sec exposure
5. M83 – 2 x 30sec exposures
6. Tarantula Nebula - 2 x 30sec exposures

Thanks for looking and any advice on how to impove my images will be much appreciated.

Hi Matty, fantastic looking images for only 30 seconds you've done a great job with them. Eta and Omega C have come out very nicely indeed.

I can hardly wait now to get my bits for the 400D.

No advice from me, I haven't even seen first light with my digital. I'll probably be asking you for advice.

Cheers

totally agree with Ric. nice shot for 30 secs. now you have to go longer and use lower iso setting to minimise that noise

with the live view and no need for long expo cable, canon makes things easier.

i'm glad that you're hooked! give it a few more months and you'll be staying up all night till the sunrise lol. keep them coming .

Thanks guys,

A EQ mount is the next thing on my TO GET list. So I predict long and sleepless nights ahead.

Thanks Dave,

The best thing about staying up all night is that I will be able to image Jupiter and then be able to image the faint DSOs.

It just keeps getting better.

Congrats on your first light Matt. As far as processing, I found that Eta Carinae was the easiest to practice all the different tools in PS.

Just import your image of Eta into PS and push the curve level up and you will see the hidden data in your image appear. Then adjust the colour saturation and just keep on practicing with other tools such as levels to darken the background after using curves .. That's how we started out.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions there's loads of fellow imagers only to pleased to help.

Thanks Barb,

I ran my Eta Carinae image through PS and played around with it. I was amazed how much hidden data there was in that image.

This is what I ended up with. For only a 30 second image I am very pleased with it. If I had captured more frames and stacked them. The noise in the picture would disappear.

Making good progress Matty. Yep, longer and more exposures will see the quality of your output improve. Keep at it.

Well done Matt

If you want to play with this image further you can download a free program called Noiseware which takes out the noise from your image.

Link to Noiseware

http://www.imagenomic.com/download_nwsa.aspx

Click on Free Download For Windows

When you open your image in Noiseware go to the default bar blue arrow at the top then scroll down the drop down menu to Weaker Noise and then hit go.

Noiseware will automatically take out the noise in the image then save it. Sometimes it's a little harsh and removes some detail and colour which you can restore by taking the image back to PS and add a little colour back, but until you start stacking it's worth using

Give it a try

Thanks for your help Barb.

I downloaded Noiseware and ran my Eta Carinae image through it.

Noiseware got rid of all the noise in the image. It looks great now.

Here it is, hot out of Noiseware.

That's a great result Matt.

OK Noisware isn't the B all and end all but it's a good program for anyone starting out in DS imaging.

Once you start start stacking doing separate darks or ICNR your less likely to have to use such a program.

We find with the 40D the subs are very clean and rarely have to use any form of noise reduction at all.

Now you've done Eta why not try doing the same processing steps on your Tarantula

Great first light images! the cleaned up Eta Carinae is very impressive!

drop the iso to 800, take more 30 sec images (or longer exposure if your mounting hardware will allow it)

Great start!!

Superb !!!

Can't wait for my 40D (in the next few weeks) and my Atlux (some time in June ?) to show up.

Need to get cracking and finish revamping / rebuilding my 10" newt OTA too.

Now if only the clouds , rain and wind would rack off !!!!

Is your 450D modified ?

Not yet because I recently just got it. I hope to in the future to get it modded but for now it will stay unmodded.

Was going to ask the same question Matt about modded - but now I'll ask where you got it and how much?

Cheers, Darryl.
