Angry "vision" term creeping into the media

Hi All,
I have to get this off my chest....
Not sure if anyone else has noticed this but it's driving me up the wall!
I've noticed an increasingly frequent frequent use of the term "vision" instead of the good old "video footage" expression.

For example, on some morning TV news (newstainment/trash) they will be discussing some story such as, say floods somewhere or other, and then say something like: "We have some vision of it (then cut to some video footage)" or after a bit of video then say "wasn't that just amazing vision, thanks to our reporter Blondie Pimpleface who is actually nowhere near the real disater area..." etc., etc., etc.

What's next? Will they start using "hearing" for segments of the broadcast that include recordings of a phone conversation?

"Stay tuned, coming up some great hearing of Mr X arguing with a Telco support line...".

I think what really bugs me is knowing that they're doing this until it becomes part of the vocabulary or possibly just to annoy people in order to gain ratings!

I don't dare complain (say by email to a TV company) for fear they'll get the message that it's working and redouble their efforts!!!!

"We just got this "writing" this morning by email of some loony who hates our usage of "vision", seriously, we tracked his phone number down so we cant get you "vision" of our conversation with him but here's a snippet of "hearing" we captured from reaching him on his mobile".

Oh well....I'll probably keep exercising the only form of control I have which is to switch station the second I hear that annoying word (though THAT practice drives my girlfriend nuts...).

I must be turning into a grumpy old man or something....

Just one more example of the incursion of 'Americanese' into our language. I could list many examples, most of which bug me as well I've had this discussion with people, and some of the examples I bring up are already so entrenched into our daily speech that they will argue that we've always used those terms!

I'll have to agree with your thoughts Frank, languages are continually evolving as you say but the use of "vision" is a strange one and it seems like we are following some trend somewhere.

We could at least come with one of own.

I agree Frank, but what really bugs me is when people still say (two thousand and eight), when I think it should be 2008, (twenty o eight)

What is going to happen when we get to 2032 for eg, are they going to say (two thousand, and thirty two), or are they going to say (twenty thirty two).
Imaging this one, 2187, (two thousand, one hundred and eighty seven)

thanks guys,
I dont feel so alone anymore!
I'm a twenty 'O eight guy myself too!

lets just hope another one i heard the other day doesnt catch on...some TV reporter commenting on a local disaster remarked on the "enourmousness" of it....I guess enormity just didn't convey the sheer enourmousness of it all....
*(I'm not making this up!)

I havent laughed so much at a post in ages!

Thats some mighty fine "neuroning" you've done there Frank!

Thanks Frank, it was just like me spouting off at the TV about the tossers in the white coats for Anti-Dandruff shampoos playing with futuristic year 2035 (thats twenty thirtyfive) transparent touchscreen "clipboard" supercomputers and sliding their hands a la Tom Cruise over the nonexistant screen to show us some crap about some statistic they made up about how much better it is with deep fortifying moose urine and some such crap!

And another thing! WHY CAN'T they build a perfect TOOTHBRUSH??????? What's next, a subsonic multifaceted harmonising antiplaque jacket with ermine bristles and carbon fibre handle encompassed with nurotex(TM) which destabilises the food particles before sucking them into a unstable variable flow 2mm wormhole and leaving your whole mouth clean??????

Wait, hang on, I think I could be in marketing!

Of course, then I will have to spell my name Chriiis, and buy a BMW convertible, which is OK because I am an excellent "motoriser"

Well i must confess im one of those that say two thousand and eight (not twenty o eight) to me it sounds a tad better, but when it hits twenty ten thats is how i will be saying it. I think it is the single digit thing.
P.S im all for FOOTAGE not vision. "vision" implies live feed to me.

regards christine

"one of those"? To be honest I've never heard it said as 'twenty-oh-eight'. Maybe I just don't move in the right circles. Maybe we need a poll!

There is a precedence for nomenclature here.

In the immortal words of Zager and Even from 1969 (thats 19 69)
In the year 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive they may find.......

Yeah baby.
