The EM-1S is a classic Takahashi mount intended for use with small refractors, or SCTs and MCTs up to eight inches aperture. It could also serve as an ultra-stable tracking mount for an SLR or medium format camera. The mechanical parts are all typical Tak quality. Metal and hardwood are used predominantly and the only plastic parts are knobs and the threaded front cover of the polar scope. Bearings in both axes are smooth with no play and the clutches are a joy to use. The tripod legs are easily disassembled from the head allowing the entire mount to fit in a small suitcase or duffle bag. A built-in scope and reticle make polar alignment relatively easy.
This mount is well used but there are a couple of nicks here and there in the paint on the tripod and head. Otherwise it is in excellent condition and ready to go. Takahashi recommends a maximum load of 22 pounds total for the scope and counterweights, but IMO this limit is conservative, and the EM-1S can handle larger, well-balanced loads.
Questions answered in advance:
1) Goto? No, it can’t be upgraded to the Temma goto system.
2) Can I add a Declination axis drive? I don’t know.
