Exclamation DECEMBER 7th to 9th : BARAMBAH CAMP - REGISTER NOW!! - LESS THAN 2 WEEKS TO DARK

We are pleased to announce that a brand new Star Party has been organised by IceInSpace members to allow other IceInSpacer's, and anyone else with an astro interest, to socialise and pursue their hobby under the very darkest skies we could find.

Welcome to the Barambah Dark Sky Camp 2007, to be held over 2 nights (Friday & Saturday nights) from the 7th to the 9th of September 2007!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Barambah Environmental Education Centre provides us with a fantastic facility that includes:
-Clean and comfortable on site dormitory accomodation for sleeping
-A fully equipped kitchen and gas barbecue for cooking
-A newly expanded dining hall (that seats up to 100 people) for eating
.... and of course some very, very dark skies for observing!!

The Barambah E.E.C. is located only a couple of hours drive NNW from Brisbane and lays in the middle of a large area of State forest. Barambah is literally miles and miles from any towns AND from any skyglow.

The site offers splendid bushwalking and or birdwatching options during the day, or the opportunity to simply relax and chat with friends, but at night when it gets dark - it REALLY gets dark!

The event is open to all but naturally we hope that as many IceInSpace members as possible will attend, so start planning right now! Further details, prices, etc, will be posted very soon but there is a limitation to how many people will be able to enjoy this great facility so grab your calendars or diaries and write this weekend in immediately!!

Great to hear Andrew! We figured there may be a number of people who couldn't make Astrofest for one reason or another who might be very interested. We'll have full pricing info and the webpage up very soon so stay tuned.

Look forward to seeing you at Barambah!

Sounds good. I have been meaning to have a look at both the Sunday Creek and the Barambah EEC for some time.

Do you know what the access road past Jimna is like? I have heard that it is the highway to hell.

What is the treeline like? Is there an observing field?
It does look very tree-ee.

http://www.barambaheec.eq.edu.au/Abo...%20oct0003.jpg

well, is there an observing field?

Did you need public liability insurance to book the Barambah EEC?

http://www.barambaheec.eq.edu.au/Com...0Liability.htm

How limited is the accomodation? No mention of numbers on the site.

Unknown to many, there is a whole network of Environmental Education Centres around Qld which are ideally suited to astrocamps. As they are owned by the Education Department, their amenities are usually up to a reasonable standard.

William I don't have all those answers - yet - but I'm working on it.

The Jimna road - Ron and I are doing a night time site recce Tuesday night. I may travel either up or back that way and give a proper report afterwards.

Paul and Ron did a daytime visit here initially last year, here's a few choice bits of their report at that time:

" Ron and I loved the place. The accommodation is first rate and we both feel the skies will be as black as pitch."

&

"This place is setup as an education facility so it lacks nothing. There are even about half a dozen computers with internet access. The place is spotless and there is room for about 60 people in excellent quality double bunks in a number of bunkhouses."
(Confirmed - although the new dining hall now seats 100, we are limited to 60 beds - so first come first served!)

&

"The Principal of the place has a 10" LX200GPS Guess what he likes to do at night . Visual observers that don't require power have a pretty good dob field with access to about 30+ deg above the horizon, but it's a huge field so with scopes set up all over the place the limitations will be small. "
(We are looking into running power across to the large observing field for imagers as well, at present we don't think this will be a problem)

&

" Sky Quality: Expected to be as black as the inside of a dogs youknowwhat. 9.5-10 Yep we think it's going to be that black. It is along way from the nearest town. "

&

"To be honest we both fell in love with the place"

Yes, we did need to arrange public liability insurance - being a State Education Dept facility insurance is mandatory, not optional. The fact that it is Government owned and compliant with everything meant it was much easier to arrange.

Hope this answers most of your questions William. Can we expect to see you there??

I'll be posting more pics after Ron & I do our overnight / sorting details trip tomorrow (Tuesday) night, although I may not get them online here until late Wednesday night.

Duncan it would be great of you could make it, but if not don't stress too much - this Camp has always been planned to be an ongoing event, never just a one of.

If you keep your options open for around new moon April next year, we'll see what we can arrange!

Sounds great guys, but that close to Astrofest, I'd be REAL unpopular!! But next April sounds great. As long as the road is okay for the trailer.

Hi Steve,

Do they cater for caravans and/or camping? I dont do bunkhouses. I am sure more people would want to know the answer to this question too.

Being so close to Astrofest I doubt I will be released but it sounds good.

Dennis.

I might pop in to meet a few of the faces on the forum - it's just up the road from me! Hehehe..

Now - - the drive in. It's not at all bad as long as you take your time. Make sure your tyres are up to it as the road has quite jagged rocks on it.

Be aware that on the weekends if you are travelling via Jimna that there is a 4 wheel drive park just down the road. You may meet some monstrosety going in the wrong direction, towing a trailer and occupying 95% of the road as they negotiate corners side ways. Through the week the issues are logging trucks - don't mess with them. They're heavy and don't pull up well. I wish some of the drivers realised that.

Enough said - usual care on a dirt road that can have hoon/logging traffic. But chances are that you will meet very few on the way in.

Evenings be on the look out for roos etc. I drive this road often and count more wildlife than cars, there are cattle within the grided area too - so watch out.

The centre itself is well set up, but somewhat limited in low level horizon - you are at the bottom of a tree lined bowl/valley, but heh - that only adds to the sky darkening right?

The centre can be approached from 3 different directions, via Jimna (S), Gympie/Widgee (E) and Goomeri. There is a road up from Kandanga but unless you know the area not advised.

If anybody needs more info on the drive in - just give me a hoy!
