Sign the petition for sure but when you see a Japanese tourist anywhere front them and say...
Australians and the rest of the world hate you killing whales ....

so what is the "problem" with killing whales?

what is the problem with Japan continuing their traditional cultural practice of eating whale meat?

why should a bunch of idiots in rubber boats be allowed to interfere?

whale stock are sufficient to recover from the small number of whales harvested every year.

in this Country, and in most, it is legal to kill mammals like sheep and pigs and cows. why not whales? they are just another type of fish.

if you want something cruel, why don't you pick on moslem halal meat. have you seen how it is done?

Dont worry Will I can make a list of things I dont like on this planet...

I dont like the fishing industry as a whole or the meat industry for that matter.

The problem with fishing generally is the numbers provided ..who says there are sufficient numbers for stocks to rejuvinate?.. who prepares the numbers?..one side or the other and as such what can you draw upon as reliable?...

the numbers provided by the folk interested in promoting whaling or the numbers provided by the folk who do not want whaling...

each have their axe to grind and the numbers only support the case being presented.

The land based harvesting of farmed protein is at least clear... you know how many animals you have for a start and you know how many you kill..fishing you have no idea what you start with.

I think scientists simply have themselves on to believe they can do a survey and know really all that is going on under the sea...

I wish if nothing else that Japan would abondon the hypocracy of their "science"..they are no more interested in science when eating whale meat than my dog is interested in science when chewing on a bone... to say they are makes it worse .. they want food why not at least be honest to say that is the game and not the science crap.

And as to subscribing to cruelty for the sake of culture I say no... be it Japanese or Moslem culture, and many cultures have nasty ideas lets face it...

food is finally about getting fuel to the body ... but of course I would have little chance that view will be accepted by various groups who place themselves above other living things to support their special "needs" and "rights"...

Still one issue at a time and the thread is about whales and a petition... I signed it and surprised how many after me is a short time..

No doubt the mob running it has their axe to grind I dont know what maybe they will use the petition to simply get funding on other matters..who knows... but on the face of it it seems a worthy cause..

Another area that is so cruel and stupid is humans delight in wearing animal skin feathers etc,... the use of animals in medicne of dubious worht... practices of eating various parts of animals..tigers for example in the belief that by doing so the properties of the animal will be instaled in the consumer...such a sad planet full of superstition and culture.

Will: That is probably the most ridiculous statement I will read all week if not year.

a) they are not fishes, they are mammals. You didnt know that so I would love to see your evidence for suggesting their stock is sufficient to recover. Does that include humpbacks? Its only taken what... 20 or 30 years to recover from the endangered list?

b) their gestation period + developmental period + low number of calves each cycle means that each whale killed takes much, much, much longer to replace through natural breeding in the wild
c) there is not a single whale that is "in excess" in the wild.
d) just because we hate whaling, doesnt mean we love everything else.

I agree about halal meat, and have heard horror stories from people in the abbies, but its apples and oranges. The meat industry in general is extremely unpleasant, and condemning whaling does NOT have anything to do with saying we are all for other things that are bad. Personally I am particularly against the permitting of certain northern aboriginal tribes to "hunt" dugong... its tradition so they use power boats and rifles... real traditional.

Alex: Please do not associate Japanese whaling with true science. True science does not claim to know everything that is happening in the ocean at all. The Japanese claim to scientific research justifying their whale hunts is NOTHING MORE than their exploitation of a loophole in the global moratorium permitting them to kill the creature which is otherwise completely forbidden. Also, I do not believe that telling a Japanese tourist would help.. it would only make them feel more isolated. I know a number of people in Japan right now and (since I expressed my complete disgust at this occurrence) they have told me that they have never seen whale meat for sale, and they have not spoken with anyone who would eat it. In fact, a number of Japanese protest groups exist against it. It is not right to assume that the entire people are guilty... Its kind of like spitting in the face of an Australian for the fact we previously were with America in not rattifying Kyoto... it certainly was not the consensus of the country to do so.

But overall, Japan is permitting its "fisherman" to do some serious wrongs here. Personally Id like to know more about Rudds plan to use the Navy to "prevent" them from doing so, especially in our waters? Problem is, it could lead to a pretty serious conflict if it came to blows.

so who the hell are you to tell people what they can and cannot eat?

Minke whales are certainly not endangered, and of course I am aware that they are classified as mammals. I cannot see the problem with a modest Japanese harvest.

Actually, whale meat is quite nice. Tastes like beef with fishy taste. It used to be in the shops for sale long time ago in Europe. The biggest problem with people today and in the past is that they think than their way of life is only the right one and any one doing something differently should be forced to do it our way. If its not whales we would find something else to stir things up.
Anyhow if we continue to pressure Japanese to stop whaling they and the Scandinavians will resume full scale whaling regardless if like it or not. The whale is just an other animal. If it is smart enough it will survive, if not it will become extinct as thousands other species did in ages gone past. Nothing last forever.

Lovely. "If it is smart enough it will survive"
Gets my vote for this thread's least intelligent statement.... behind "Whales are just a kind of fish"....

Thanks, that just confirms my earlier observation about how people think. “Everything I do or think is right and everybody else is wrong “
