Cooled Camera Question

Hi Guys.

Keeping the Camera chip as cool as possible when imaging is obvious, and i fully understand the reason.

However, if i can get my cameras temp down to say 5 degrees or less, but find that my scope, in my instance the Tak, is 15 degrees, how will this effect the focus, as one is different to the other.


In the winter months there is no problem as both are the same, very cold and equal in temp.

In this situation i refocus each time the temp drops by one degree, and it works fine.

So if the camera chip and the scope are vastly different in temp, dose this not effect the focus, as i would be focusing through a 15 degree scope and imaging with at 5 degree chip.

the cooled camera is fine it is the scope that is the problem. if the camera is cooled but at a constant temp it will be OK, where the scope is continually changing temp until it stabilises

Thanks Houghy, but that is the point, what good is to cool the chip to say minus -5 or so and having the scope at 10 degrees, seems to defeat the purpose.

If they were both the same temp, all good and well

Cooling the CCD is all about reducing the "CCD noise" (ie dark current).

Cooling the tube/OTA, is all about the visual effects (ie shimmering) if the air movement because of the temperature differential inside the OTA to ambient.

There is no significant need for them to be the same. Your focus issues will come from expansion/contraction of the OTA - the chip temperature has no relevance to the focus.
