What Happens When The Wheels Fall Off

Hi to you All.

As Ken (Ballarat Dragons ) mentioned earlier in an other post last night, although some Moon glow, it was a perfect crisp night, so where else would one be, but imaging, an so it was.

By 4.00 am it was time to pack it away, I had capture the Horse Head Nebula and also the Helix Nebula, and was pretty pleased with the results, but i feel they could still do with some longer exposures.

Anyway this is not what this story is about.

Ok, I said to myself time to give it away, so packed, cleared and put in order the Observatory, checked the power was off, OK close her up...

As some of you may know my Observatory moves as a whole, and the complete building rolls on four sets of wheels alone a rail at the bottom, and works quite well too.

Started pushing, and away she went, and then bang, and a sudden stop, bugger i said must have a stone or something under the wheels, or something,

Anyway on closer inspection with the torch, i had found that the front wheel snapped and fell off, and the support frame dug in nicely into the wooden running rail.

So here I was, 4.00 am in the morning, looking at a half closed Observatory, with the set-up still out side.

After some carefully selected adjectives, I mumble to my self, what the .... am i going to do about this, cant leave it like that as I had to be away early that very morning.

So to cut a long story short, just picture me, at 4.30 in the morning with two ropes hooked to the bottom front corners of the Observatory, and wrapped around my waist, dragging this thing to it's closed position.

Yep, I can laugh now but it was not very amusing when your alone at that time of night, and the wheels fall off.

So no imaging for a little while until repairs are made, just thought i would share this with you

Who said astronomy isn't interesting.

Cheers Leon

Gee Leon, Glad it didn't tip and fall on all the gear!!!!!

I was imaging until 3:30am, so 4am was a bit too late to ring me for help

It must have been the Ballarat air last night coz I had a bad start, and you had a bad end!

I started my night at around 8pm but didn't get everything working until 1:30am

First was alignment. My RA setting circle had moved (affects 'Home' position) and I didn't notice until I re-polar aligned and 3 star aligned 4 times!!!! Then none of my 3 cameras would work, and then the lappy crashed. I finally got it all working then the mount froze while supposedly tracking 47Tuc. Re-3 star aligned (5th time), and then all the cameras stopped working again!

Finally by 1:30am all was good.
From then on everything behaved

Hmmm, Ballarat Gremlins hit us maybe

BTW, it was -1.1 last night Not a lot of fun out in the ice trying to sort it all out!!!!

Ah well Ken, that's the joys of Astronomy, nothing major really, I just have to raise the whole building and put some new wheels under it.

All the gear is already out of it, and out of harms way while the job is in progress.

As you said last night was beautiful, and i did have a good night until that happened, the Moons out, so that is other to do time, stuff.

Cheers Leon

Just an edit, Ken, it wasn't that cold here, didn't get a frost, maybe i was to hot under the collar and it melted

Not a nice thing to happen at that time of the morning Leon.

Luckily none of your equipment was damaged.

With a 4wd winch it matters not if the wheels fall off..and they have.. but with power you can scull drag it if the battery has power.
If not the green tarp goes over and engineering called the next day.
What fun we have..and we are all alone.. who cares..no one but us Leon..those who are up and working when not much else does.
I have 12 wheels now I dont give a ratz if a couple fall off, nothing is going to take away from my experience.

Not good guys, it really sounds like you both had more than your fair share of the gremlins.

Hope all is good now.

Thanks Ric. Mine was only technical difficulties. Lots of them No probs now.

But Leons could've been nasty!! With the possibility of personal injury and equipment damage. And will take a bit of fixin'.

Thanks Ric,

Yeah, Zuts pointed it out to me 2 days ago. I wasn't watching and it snuck passed me

Houghy also passed the 10,000 on the same day and no-one noticed that either

Hi Leon, have you got any pictures of your ob?
I'm keen to see your setup - thinking of building my own.

Hi Mrsnipey,

These images may give you some idea of what my observatory looks like, these images were during the construction.

As you can see, the whole building moves alog the rails with sets of very low wheels attached to the bottom of the structure.

Hope this helps.

Hi Leon,
Excellent ob!
I never thought of putting the whole thing on wheels.
For some reason I thought you had a portable ob and you
were pushing it around the yard when the wheel fell off.

I see you've got a number of piers (I think that's what they're called).
Do you find the ob gets in the way at all?
