Focal reducer hassle

I picked up a Bintel 0.5 FR a little while ago..... Not giving great results with the ED80. Is this all I can expect from this FR? - or have I done something wrong. I'm sure the lens isn't perfectly square in its holder???
Focus not perfect in this shot - on axis focus was achievable, just lots of aberrations as shown as you head off-axis.
I just had the FR screwed into the nose piece of the DSI - I couldn't get any image with the extension tube that was supplied with the FR....
It's always something!

Hi Lee

I didn't stuff around with those el-cheapo FR's, I went straight to a William Optics model. I havn't used it photographically yet but Paul, 1 Ponders, has and it appears to do an excellent job, I will get around to using it if I can ever get any decent weather.

I just steer away from the cheap ones.

Cheers

Hi Lee

I was of the understanding that reducers / correctors / flatteners are best when matched to a specific optical system for which they were designed? If that is the case, then the reducer may not be suited to the ED80 in terms of its design and placement in the optical train?

I know that Takahashi seem to have quite specific reducers for their specific scopes and they also need to be placed at a defined distance from the sensor, using specific spacers, to avoid coma, etc.

Cheers

Hi Dennis

I think thats why people are getting good results with the WO Reducer/Flattener, it is matched closely to the ED80's focal length and the T-Ring is at the required distance.

I agree with the Tak's, with my FS-102 the Reducer/Flattener has to have A CA-35 adapter in the mix to get the right distance.

Cheers

Hi Lee
I also bought one of these and have tried everything without a good result to speek of. Would have been cheaper and probably would have got better results using the bottom of a coke bottle. I think I will have to look at the WO reducer.

I knew from the start it wasn't going to be the best around - I figured with the small chip of the DSI that I might get way without a very flat field
Buy it cheap, buy it twice.....

How much is the WO one?

$199 US for the v3, but I don't think anyone has it in stock right now. I looked all over the place, and ran across a few V1's, but no V2 or V3 models in Australia. There may be some out there, but I couldn't find them. I'm getting a Baader tube as well to match the reducer distance from my sensor.

Mine has been back-ordered for at least a month so far. Last night was my first night out playing with the ED80, and the necessity of the flattener made its self apparent. My Megrez 90 should be here on Monday or so, and it is supposed to be an even better match for this reducer.

On a side note, WO must be near releasing their new Synta focuser, as they have removed the old one from their shop.

I got mine from OPT, I think it was around US$148.00, that was a V2 model.

One of the things that swayed me was it was designed for the APS chip of a DSLR.

I got the same as John, WO v2 model, arrived last week. Waiting for clear skies tomorrow night (before the moon rises) to try it out.
