17P Holmes

I had no problems whatsoever finding this comet.
Using 12x50 binos showed it as a bright fuzz ball just above the trees.
Once I knew where it was, it stood out like the proverbials to the naked eye.
I used the Canon Powershot S3IS.
This is a small stack of 4x 3.2sec. I had 54 to stack, but DSS and Regi refused to process them all. I pushed saturation to 16 to bring out more colour. Other than that, no other processing. Not that this object needs it. Even a single frame shows yellows, green and pinks. Awesome.

2 new images. Heaps better than the first
30 x 3.2 seconds and the same image put through a high pass filter.
There is a distinct halo within the fuzziness.

Thanks guys, I bet we'll have heaps of high res stuff pouring in soon from the pros.
It's a beautiful night, apart from the moon. Can't wait to see what Dennis captures.

Doesn't matter that the others capture it too, be proud that YOU got it.

And you got it nicely

Well Done Jeanette!

Been clouded here tonight in Darwin and when cloud has cleared a little, I haven't been able to get away from trees blocking the northern horizon

Hopefully tomorrow night - I'll try to get to a different location and cross fingers that the "build-up" goes quiet tomorrow - major lightning and heavy downpours today - almost like being back in Queensland!

Hi Jeanette

Those are terrific photos that really show off the unique characteristics of this comet so well. Thanks for making the effort to get out and grab these to share with the idle, lazy sods like me who didn’t even try, as I have a rotten N Horizon, blocked by trees which also faces right into the light dome of down town BrisVegas. Excuse, excuses…

Cheers

Dennis

Fantastic result :-)..
I would never even try this, knowing it is so close to the horizon (2.5deg for Melbourne).. How high was she over there?

nucleus

The nucleus has a curious shape to it, heart shaped sort of.
Could it be a split?

Great shot jjj, although i must say that i double checked my images and my shot i posted was slightly out of focus, i posted it this morning and i was still tired so maybe that had something to do with it.
I'll post another image on the Solar system thread!

Great work!!
Cheers!
