Question about names of towns in Queensland

While looking over a map, I notice several towns in Queensland - all in a fairly close area - have names like Comet, Capella, Arcturus, and Orion.

A bit more a coincidence than I would suspect.

What is the background on this, anyone know?

Thanks

Scott

"The town ‘Comet’ was named after the 'Comet River' which runs close to the township. The river itself was named after Ludwig Leichhardt's observation of Halley's Comet in the skies during his travels through Central Queensland in the late 1800's."

That was from Google, but I couldn't find any refernces to the other places. Are they just property/station names?

The mystery continues!

Hmm! Just shows you can't rely on everything you read on the web.

The last bit of info was from:

http://www.queenslandholidays.com.au...o-visit/comet/

Of course, as we know (especially those smarty-pants who got top marks in the 3rd Birthday Competition) that the last Halley appearances were in 1835, 1910 and 1986.

Actually the comet Ludwig Leichhardt saw (on 28 Nov 1844) was C1844 U1 (Laugier) / 1844 II.

I don't think I'll bother informing queenslandholidays.com

I have it on good authority from the local UFO group that some of the residents of these towns have small bodies, large eyes, are hairless and have a decidedly green skin cast.

Well, as long as they pay taxes, I guess that's fine....

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info.

Here is the page out of Leichhardt's journal -
http://image.sl.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/e...157/a313;seq=5
and here is the transcript -
http://image.sl.nsw.gov.au/Ebind/c157/a313/a313005.html

Arcturus Downs was a property, acquired in 2002 by Aquila Resources, for
its coal. The coal deposit has been named Orion.
http://www.geonames.org/2177722/arcturus-downs.html
The name of the property goes back to at least the early 1900's.

A word of warning Scott. Many of the square black dots you see on
Australian maps in more sparsely poulated regions are simply farm houses,
or "stations" as they are called. So if you are ever driving in those parts and looking
for food or fuel, don't mistake them for towns.

Best regards

Gary

And "Shut the flamin' gate, Mate!"

Mostly friendly folks on properties - probably share some food and fuel, if needed - in return for a good yarn!
