Clavius mosaic from 23/9

It's taken a week to put together, and about 100,000 frames of video, but finally here's my Clavius image from data taken last Sunday.

The image posted here is half-size. If you're feeling brave you can get the full size image here:

http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/gal...vius/large.jpg

warning: 300kb image.

Scope: http://www.acquerra.com.au/astro/lexx.html
Capture: 9 panels, each 11000 frames, 40fps @ fl=14,000mm
red filter (Astronomik).

cheers, Bird

Oh snap!

That image is fantastic! That looks like the kind of image you'd find on the internet from the Lunar Orbiter probes or Clementine! Fantastic shot! Definitely submit it to LPOD!

Just beautiful, Anthony. Well worth the effort I'd say.

How long did you spend recording?

Recorded from 9:32 until 10:13, so just over 40 minutes (with small gaps to reposition) at about 40fps. :-)

cheers, Bird

Thought you Lunar guys might be interested in Retinex Image Processing.

Some samples here
http://dragon.larc.nasa.gov/retinex/Lunar_Orbiter/

I put a before and after below from a Lunar Orbiter. They look almost as good as Bird's images.

And you can get the software here. There is a free trial available.

Bert, I had a go at processing the before image you posted here, I was curious how my system stacked up against the commercial one...

Here's what I did:

- Load before.jpg image into Astra Image, rescale 2x
- Convert to greyscale
- deconvolve Maximum entropy, 10 turns, radius 1
- save

Load image into The Gimp:
- selective gaussian blur
- levels adjust (Gamma increase to 1.9)
- unsharp mask, radius 1, power 0.5
- scale down to 50% (ie back to original size)

And this is my result. Comparing it to the "after" image from Retinex, I think it's a close thing, maybe I like mine better :-)

If I'd started with a lossless image instead of the before.jpg then could likely improve it a bit more.

cheers, Bird
