jury's in on baader UHC-S

Iv'e been trying to find reviews concerned with this filter in a direct comparison with the lumicon UHC. In 4 hrs of googleing, I ended up with ONE comparison (visually) between the two. You guy's are gunna shoot me when I tell you I forgot to save the link, & cant find it in my history!

Anyway, it was in Russian & after translation it still did'nt make sense till I read it 8 times. The conclusion I came to was that the guy that did the comparison claimed it was better than the lumicon on CERTAIN nebula.

Seeing I'm a pretty impatient type, I cant be bothered waiting for someone to write a decent comparison between the baader & the top brands, so I'm going to risk it for a biscuit & order the 1.25" UHC-S (from AOE obviously, seeing their the cheapest) I already have 2 baader filters the fringe killer & the contrast booster. They both do an excellent job for the price IMHO.

Don't forget to do a review for the site when you receive it! Interested to read the comparisons, since they seem a lot cheaper than the standard UHC.

There is a review done in the August 2005 edition of Astronomy called Secret Weapons by Phil Harrington.
This is how he rated the F/Ts on a scale of 0-5. 0= object invisible; 1= visible only with great difficulty; 2= visible with moderate difficulty; 3= visible with little difficulty; 4= visible easily; 5= wow!

I've only given you the review for Baader and Lumicon Narrowband F/T's but it is a comprehensive review on all the major brands of Broadband, Narrowband OIII F/T's

I have had this review for several months but could not release any information on it as it had not previously gone to print. Phil rated the Baader UHC-S as inferior to the Astronomics UHC, Lumicon UHC, Orion Ultrablock, Televue Narrowband, Meade Narrowband and he rated the DGM Optics NPB filter is the best narrowband filter of all and it is quite inexpensive. I suggest you read a copy of the review prior to dropping your hard earned, particularly if visual astronomy is the main intended purpose.

I haven't used the DGM Optics NPB filter, but I know Phil was very very impressed with it. He said it was the best overall deep sky filter he had used.

For those interested in following it up, the cost landed in Australia will be well under $AUS 100 as these are currently on special for $US55. I may be interested in ordering the 2" version so we could pool the postage costs there. Anyone else on the Central Coast interested in ordering one ?

I'll be ordering the 1.25" version, so pooling postage is a good idea. Unfortunately he's on holidays by the looks of it, so we mightn't hear back from him for a week or so.

I am in no rush, I already have both the Astronomiks UHC and OIII in 1.25" versions, I thought about the 2" Astronomiks but got gunshy at over 400 large ones for a filter. The 2" DGM NPB at around $150 sounds like a good option to me, let me know when Dan contacts you and give him my email address as we should each pay for our own goods separately, then ship them together, that way we are covered off better for warranty purposes if Dan can organise that.

That sounds good buying 2 x 2" and a 1.25" leaves the total order under $AUS 500. I was just thinking that if I order the filters, Dan may do us a good deal because he knows that I am a friend of Phil Harrington's and co-moderator of Phils TT group.

If we keep the order value under $AUS 500 we avoid paying GST as well.

Hi all
Next clear night I will see about getting out with some observing, will test both the Baader and Lumicon UHCs visually on some familiar DSO's like the Lagoon, Triffid nebulae etc. and get back to you. The Baader is designed to be less severe on supressing starlight, however both filteres arent good for star clusters/galaxies, only emission nebulae where the light comes from specific wavelengths (colours). The Baader is meant to be both photo and visual, the Lumicon strictly a visual filter as it doesnt let through as much Hydrogen Alpha (deep red) light. More info when I test both filters visually. (Hopefully tonight)
