Dome shutter design query

Hi all - just new here so hope that this query is not considered off-topic:

I've built a geodesic dome from plywood and as soon as I have attached it to the dome's base ring, I intend to cut out the aperture, which will be somewhere in the range 750 - 1000 mm wide. I am looking for ideas or tips on making a successful shutter. I plan to have a conventional shutter that slides up over the aperture and down the back of the dome (rather than the twin doors that open sideways). I am looking for a low-profile result, and naturally need it to be weatherproof and slide easily.

I have seen pics of shutters that use grooved wheels either side of a round bar. Has anyone just used teflon runners? Is plywood or masonite okay for the shutter itself? Or any other ideas?

BTW, the diameter is 3.6 metres.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris, to IIS!

I can't personally help you, but wish I was in the same position!

Have you read this review about a home dome? It might give you some ideas..

Thanks Mike - I had a look at that review a few days ago but unfortunately I can't get much from it. Not to worry, we'll work it out. If I stand and look at the dome for long enough, combined with some doodling, it will all become clear!

Hi Chris

Try giving Barry Armstead a shout - his forum name is bloodhound31. He built a geodesic dome I think, and had a lot of info on his site about it.

Another option is Shawn from Ravenshoe (forum name Shawn) - he built one recently too.
