Someone needs a good slapping!

Gees i HATE emails like this, just sent to me today, i sent out a reply saying it was total B-S.....

Quote:
ALL MUST SEE!!

*Two moons on 27th August 2007*

*27th August; the day the Whole World is waiting for......

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will
culminate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65 Million miles of
earth.
Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the
earth has 2 moons.
The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it
again.

Someone needs a good slapping for writing that one!

Sky and Tel actually has a story on their website about this "hoax" which traces back its original source. It makes for an interesting read, basically someone created this email in 2003 and said that Mars will appear the same size as the Moon when viewed through a telescope at 75x...blah, blah, blah!

Someone removed the reference to a scope and 2003 and it has been circulating ever since! Unfortunately, I don't have the link at hand...

Yep, it comes out around August every year for the last several years.

And I get a heap of phone calls about it coz our club is listed in 'Astronomy Societies'. I'm sure many clubs get the same calls. I also get locals asking me each time too.

But the good point: It ALWAYS leads into a conversation about Astronomy!

So, turn this piece of ridiculous nonsense into a positive and use it as a stepping stone to introduce more people to 'real' Amateur Astronomy

Well done, mate.

No good just telling folk what's NOT happening. Direct 'em to something else just as exciting, which they can see unfold without any optical gear - which is a bonus

I would be inclined to send an e-mail back to the person who forwarded it as follows:

Well mate, you better go get your family and prepare to spend your last few days with them, because after Mars has left its orbital path and is on a collision course for earth orbit, the earths crust will crack, earthquakes and volcanoes, tidal waves that Steven Spielberg couldn't make look real, fire, ice brimstone and death will spell the end of all life as we know it.

Have a nice day.

YOU TWIT!

You know the word "Gullible" is not in the dictionary?
