Pocket Sky Atlas

I have just received my copy of the Sky and Telescope's Pocket Sky Atlas. Having already got 3 atlases, my first impressions are that this one is a real little ripper It has very clear charts that seem to have just the right amount of info, and a good colour too. Very easy to turn to a page that is marked as - say good for July evenings - and there are galaxies in red, nebulae in green, and clusters in yellow I like the index, which is broken into stars, clusters, galaxies etc. Then there is all the Messiers and theCaldwell catalogue.
What do you people think of it?? Jolly good value for $39 I reckon

I agree, it is a nice little addition to the Astro gear pile.

It is a nice ready and usable tool.

They have a little pocket star atlas at Angus and Roberts that I had my eye on.
The dimensions of this one was 4"x3" approx.
Is the Sky and Tel one a similar size? What mag does it go down to?

Actually it is now the only atlas that I use at the eyepiece. The only critisism I can find is that galaxies tend to disappear with red light but once you know the shape to look for then its workable. Great value for money.

Hi JJJ,
Hope you are recovering fast
The atlas goes down to mag 7.6, and I just measured it as follows:
220mm x 150mm or for us oldies, 8.5" x 6"
Each page is a thick card, so should take a bit of punishment, and being a ring binder, you can fold it back so you can hold the book in one hand showing one page

I agree - it's very well designed. Spiral backed, got that satin "waterproof" feel to it, I love the touches like the telrad circles on the overlapped jacket, etc. I'm going to pick up a second one just for the bookshelves!

I took it out with my binos last week and spent a couple of hours between Ara and Sag. hunting stuff down. Very nice.
