Yet Another HorseHead IC434, NGC2023

Located in the constellation of Orion the Horsehead is part of a dense cloud of gas in front of an active star-forming nebula known as IC434. The nebulosity is illuminated by Sigma Orionis (HD37699) located directly abouve IC434. The Horsehead is located at a distance of~ 1,600 light-years.

The data is 2 years old. I got so frustrated processing the image in 2023 that I gave up. Altinak flares traversed the whole image. This is the final image from my trusty Moravian G2-8300 that just decided to die a few months ago.

17.5 hrs of data (10 hrs Ha) from Jan/Feb 2023 with a TEC180fl, FRC, G2-8300, Astronomik filters.

Special thanks to Niall MacNeill and Rodney Watters for help in finalizing the image.

You can never have too many Horseheads Peter!

It could be argued to be THE premium astro deep sky object. Certainly it is recognised very well by the broad public.

Greg.

Thank you all for your generous comments....a nice surprise given I'd totally given up on ever having a useful image from this data. I'm sad about the death of the Moravian camera but, also see how clearly better my new Player One Poseidon M is in just about every way. RIP
