Jupiter and Mars on Jan 6th

Seeing what I can get from a 10" f5 Newt on planets. Lots to learn with processing but makes it all very interesting. Both taken on the night of Jan 6th.

Wow, beautiful results Ben!

3600 frames, that's where I'm going wrong, that and 8" mirror.

Not entirely sure I listed that all correctly but basically what I could get in a 30s video capture (for Juputer) of 40s video capture (Mars) with an 80-90% histogram through the brightest filter. Wanted around 100 frames per second so this determined the gain and exposure length. Seemed to work okay with my setup. I did a Jupiter last year with an 8” and it was okay, but pulling out details seem to make the image quite chunky (more likely my bad processing though). The 10” I don’t have to push so hard when sharpening. The key seems to be sky conditions though. I went by the Meteo Blue weather app which has an Astronomical Seeing conditions pane and it reliably listed Monday as a 4/5 :-) Sorry if that’s all blatantly obvious - mostly new to me!!!

Ben,
Seriously very good planetary work on display.
Mars is striking with the ice caps and surface lava plains nearing opposition.
Jupiter is nice and vibrant with well resolved moons to-boot.
Successfully achieved : should be most pleased with these.
Well done.
Anthony

Cheers Anthony. Feel very much a beginner with planets so your comments are more than welcome. Hard to know what I might be doing wrong/right etc. but it certainly makes life fun… and, I’m sure like most, I love the planets!

I have a 5 times powermate now and have seen some very good results used with an 8" scope, I just haven't gotten to try it yet. One day.
I do think the extra mirror size adds overall to the results but the powermates have a good reputation.

I came across some amazing C8 pictures of Jupiter on Instagram the other day so certainly possible to get results, given good seeing. Never used anything other than a powermate (great reputation and managed to get one second hand) so not sure how they compare with anything else.

Cheers! Finding new tools to deal with ‘the rind’ (wavesharp and some masking in PixInsight).

Both are superb images! Isn’t it amazing to observe the weather patterns on these distant worlds- awesome! Well processed and the colour balance is excellent.
