Jupiter from last night - Bit of a test-run after some maintenance on the c14. Conditions not very good and I still need to do a fine-collimation once the conditions will allow. Still excited to finally be able to point the scope at our Jovian neighbour high(ish) in the sky. No point in shooting anything but IR with the sky so unstable - but did get one shot that scrubbed up ok.
Wow! If that's what you've produced without fine collimation and in less than perfect conditions, then your shots when everything is 100% are going to be killers. Very nicely done indeed.
Great result David, looks like it won't take much work to make the adjustments to your scope. This opposition of Jupiter may be the first time I'll have to take my scope somewhere else away frome home to get a shot of it. It's low altitude will hide it in the nearby tree line.
Cheers Steve- yes the IR really does bring out some interesting detail and certainly helps to cut through the poor seeing. I especially liked the detail in the GRS.
Thanks Michael- yeah it’s really low now for us with maximum 45degrees. Unfortunately that means we can only really hope for good views on the very best seeing and right on the meridian. But still well worth the effort!
Thanks Warren- it’s possible I got close to good alignment by pure chance but when I was adjusting collimation with the camera (and IR685 filter) which usually gives a pretty stable diffraction pattern and airy disk to collimate on it was moving all over the place. The only reason I took the shot was cause it was already on the scope so happy to get lucky for for a few min of more stable seeing

Thanks Jeff- yeah IR is a wonderful option when the conditions aren’t great. I always have a visual session before getting the imaging gear out and it’s pretty easy to see through the eyepieces in about 5sec what kind of night you’re going to have!
