Rosette Mosaic

My attempt at a mosaic of the Rosette was all the way back in March, lots of putting off and looking at the best way to post process delayed this until now…enter APP! Thanks again David for the suggestion.

It’s not too bad as I also miscalculated and only managed 8 subs as apposed to 15 for the other 3 panels - dipped below the horizon

Anyway, my old iMac repurposed with Windows grunted for like hours to process, unless of course I did something wrong - highly likely. It really is pretty easy!

But, it completed and am pretty happy with the result, even if the Ha steals the show!

So, captured on my beginners rig:

Skywatcher 80ed
Celestron AVX
533MC
ASIAIR mini
Guidescope with a 224MC
3 panels 15 x 2 minute subs
1 panel 8 x 2 minute subs

Great job, Mark, especially considering the limited integration time. What filter did you use? Btw, APP is an excellent tool and is especially good at stitching together multiple panels, even with different FOV resolution. Alex

That’s a wonderful result for such a short integration. If you increase the number of subs that noise will drop and the detail/contrast will be better too.
Just a hint with APP mosaics, it runs veeeeery very slow. So to save you a headache with larger data sets, you can just process each frame individually (not mosaic mode), and then start a new mosaic integration with those individual stacks. The trick then is to find the best integration mode to give the best balance and avoid join artefacts. I learned this after a rather ambitious project that took APP around 36hrs to integrate!

Ok, so not me, but APP on mosaics, haha! I agree that my next step is to increase integration time, I was watching a Cuiv video last night and picked up an easy way to get the framing etc. spot on for multiple nights on the same target! This will be great, always wondered how people get it the same on multiple nights. Definitely for my next target I’m going to try multiple nights and up my subs! More detail and less noise will be wonderful :-)

Yeah, APP took like 7 or 8 hours to process the mosaic, crazy. Thanks for the tip, I’ll try that with my next mosaic attempt.

I’m also thinking of giving my 8” SCT some air time for a galaxy capture although on the AVX it’s a fine line when it comes to payload! Saving up for a better mount!
