M31

After a night of sightseeing around the sky
I realised M31 was a possible target.

I have a huge tree due North.

Yep.

M31.

So close and yet so far away.

Bugger.

I am round 10mtrs above sea level so....

Looks like I'm going to try a different location.

Perhaps some of you further North could get a few early hours into giving this one a try ?

It is certainly not impossible.

Paul.

Paul, that's bad luck having a tree obscuring your northern view. Just cut it down and all your frustrations will end! Shots of M31 pop up in the forum quite often now as more members realise that with a good clear view of a northerly horizon it is definitely a getable target from Australia. I've captured it from a location close to Melbourne, so anywhere north of that is of course, very achievable .

Hi Paul - bummer about the trees … got a chain saw? I’ve got M31 on my list of things to have a crack at … in the Sep/Oct timeframe. I’m in BrisVegas and it gets to just over 20° but I’d be shooting across the top my neighbours (hot) roofs; doable but I reckon I’ll head to somewhere with a clean, open view of the north. Alex

Definitely possible Paul. If you're keen maybe find a spot with the view and make a project of it? I Grabbed the 30 mins a night that I could between the trees for weeks but the result was poor so moved the scope for a proper view. Very rewarding.

Hi Paul.

I've observed M31 several times from my backyard using my 10 inch dob. I even saw it's companion M32, but alas haven't been able to see M110 yet.

Looks like a chainsaw is in order
