Fingerprinting

Hallo,
When I started my LX200 GPS today I observed something I've not seen before.
After start up it went to initializing scope and then the display said
Fingerprinting
and the scope moved for a few seconds. Has anyone come across this before? What does it do? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks Chris, much appreciated. The link still works and has made things clearer. I did change the battery which may have caused this issue/question.
