Where's the light?

I was just outside watching a satellite and thought, "The sun is set, the moon hasn't risen, so where's the light come from that allows me to see the satellite?"

Uhh, if it's on the same side as Earth, wouldn't the earth be blocking any light from hitting the satellite? Same reason as why, it becomes...night?
