Metal Airport Scanners

Hi guys just a question please.
I have metal in my body after surgery so do i go off when i go through a airport scanner and if so do i need a medical certificate to prove that i don't carry anything suspicious.

I reckon if you use alu foil under your beanie it'll throw off the scanner.

My father would say..bureaucracy is a big animal that you must tame with paper.

Heck Leon get the certificate and frame it along with the vacuum cleaner guarantee...

Heck you could stop strangers in the street and show them your certificate..get one for sure..actually a couple..leave one at your bank obviously.

Hey Leon,

I have three screws in my neck, one in each shoulder & one in my gums... haven't set off a scanner yet...

Thus I have never even thought to obtain a medical certificate... & don't intend to..

Thank you, just asking, never been through one of those scanners before with my added metal ingredients, you do hear of strange things happening at Airports though.

Just carry a screwdriver; so you can leave those bits in the tray before going through the scanner...

I guess if you do set the scanner off, a quick pat down should then clear you, so hopefully not a show stopper?

Shouldn't be a problem, IF it goes off just tell them where the screws are and they'll do a manual scan to confirm it.

My wife just came home from knee replacement surgery.

Her doctor gave her a card to carry with her in case of scanners.

I got one from my dentist with my implant.

Interesting that some don't give them.

On a side note, my Mak90 travel case seals so well that I always have to open it for the Tassie sniffer dogs at the border.

I have a plate in my right arm and the only place where the alarm went off was in Zurich.
I showed my arm and all was good.

Implants are titanium, possibly the scanners are tuned to ignor titanium? Then again a titanium knife would be deadly, I’m guessing. However I’m certain the actual answer has something to do with medical grade titanium

I can only speak about the US but assume it is the same everywhere.

If you have metal implants in your body, it is possible that an airport metal detector will find it depending on how sensitive it is set and the amount and type of metal you have,

Some doctors will give you a note explaining your condition. However, since there is no official card in the US that you can carry to verify the existence of your implant, if you set off the detector you will be asked to step aside for further screening.

Setting off the detector is not harmful to your body, but it may be an inconvenience in your travel schedule. So be prepared, especially in the United States and other areas with elevated security, to undergo further inspection and questioning at the airport.

It is important to know that the possibility of your metal implant activating a detector does exist, so you should be prepared for a longer wait at the security checkpoint.
