Eta Carina

First use of the WO 0.8x reducer/flattener in the Orion 80ED, and my first use of a telescope in months. This shot is 9 mins total exposure.

Subject: Eta Carina Nebula
Camera: Canon 350D (unmod)
Scope: Orion 80ED 0.8x WO Reducer-Flattener No filters
Mount: LXD-75 unguided
Exposure: 9x60secs ISO 1600 (4xdarks)
Process: MaxDSLR and Photoshop. Shrunk 50% and then cropped to size.

On the Orion ED80 the WO Focal Reducer/Flattener seems okay, although some stars (surprisingly close to the centre) appear to be bent out of shape a little bit. The bananas around the edges are due mainly I think to field rotation from a bad polar alignment. Overall it's a pleasing result, so I might be using the WO x0.8 some more.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for posting, yours is the first picture ive seen from an ED80 using a WO x8 reducer, ive wondered if it would work ans it looks like it does and very well too, nice Pix. you can get the red nebulosity if you do a bit more processing in PSP or such (due unmodded 350D), good focus, great detail.

cheers..Jim

The Keyhole Nebula is an astonishing feature isn't it, and pretty big as far as astonishing astro features go. I remember my first shot of this area through a camera and thinking, Crikey, what on Earth's that wierd lookin' thing...

Looks promising, so I'll try some longer guided shots, later.
