How to control 3 Asiairs from the same phone.

I should have asked this question before I bought two more Asiair plus units but I guess I did not think it thru...I am setting up the 115 mm slowly having competed the 7 filter installation today..I cleaned all 7 filters andcthe camera sensor...

I have not really achieved much this week as I have had rather bad stomach pain which only really got better today. I will start on the eq5 and 80mm tomorrow as the new concrete piers must be ok by now.

But I have fitted the 115 mm with its guide scope and a new little ZWO mini camera ( so cute) and placed the Asiair on the scope but have yet to connect stuff although I have all the cables hanging off the set up so I can think it thru...

However the idea was to run all scopes (3) at once and it has struck me that I have no idea what should be done or if it can be done.. ( it may sound odd but I have little experience with WiFi.. that means I know nothing.

First .can I use just one phone..if not I have a second phone ( an emergency precuation after I had a bad turn and my first phone not working...but it works out well because I have it near on the roof and hot spot for internet)...and -I have a tablet which I bought to run my first Asiair but never ran that Asiair for various reasons..

So all guidance is much appreciated as it is getting to the point where it will all come together...I ever played on my new wonderful computer that my daughter built but when she added the scratch disk it lost the hard drive and she has to do something to fix that..but no worries as I still need to make a spot for it all...

Also I wonder could you run Asiair straight from the computer ..just thinking of screen size..it would be great to see incoming subs on these huge screens.

Although I lost.most most of the week and medical take away two days next week I feel things are close and I am actually getting excited because it really has taken just so much of me so far...to see it near done is something i cant express how it makes me feel...still need to learn Arduino but that seems easier than I first thought plus I have wonderful mentors.

Hmmmm no news is bad news..I have actually looked around and my impression k's you can access all three but the reality is you can only control one set up at a time...the upshot is I will need three phones or tablets..whatever..but for the convenience this gives me I am not put off...most nights I would ride y ride on mower back and forth between the o servatory and my van at least ten times...I wanted to stay but the cold drives me back to the van and curiosity back to the observatory.

I hope my experience helps others.

Hi Alex,

Here's a thought.

The ASI app on the phone connects to the ASI device through the AIR's WiFi hot-spot, right?

Why not name each of the hot-spots differently? Then you connect your phone to the correct hot spot and the ASI app will talk to that particular AIR. When you need to change which AIR you're driving, you drop the WiFi connection, connect to the next AIR and away you go.

A bit of fiddling around, to be sure, but better than buying a dedicated phone or tablet for each AIR.

Cheers,
V

I think the problem is still if it's not on screen it won't continue...I don't mind...it is still cheaper and less complex than buying more lap tops...
I have run two rigs off one lap top but dedicated ones has more appeal...

At the moment I just want it all working...I am hot for it I have given up thinking about the money having invested so much so far. Heck if another grand saw the finish well here it is...

Thanks for your input..I am not rushing out to buy anything.. I have a tablet and a phone that work for sure...my "emergency phone" not sure about it...I gave my ex a great tablet because I had no use for it... I will ask if she can do with out..or borrow it at night...it will work out...

I have had a great day..first day in a week where I felt ok so I built a frame for the new solar panels so I am still getting things done and it's all moving forward..

G’day Alex.
I noticed (but never pursued) a menu item on the ASiair Plus which reads “Change Device” or something similar. It may be worth pursuing. Once you have set up Scope A and it is happily banging away at whatever, perhaps you can”Change Device” to the next ASiair controlling Scope B using the same tablet/phone for both.

Once the ASiair is running, and barring some malfunction, it doesn’t need access to your tablet. You could turn it off I suppose. The problem with this - assuming it is possible at all - is that if something goes wrong with ScopeA while you’re dallying with ScopeB, you won’t know about it. The list of things is endless.

Why not begin by investigating that “Change Device” setting. That may well open or close down my brilliant idea.

Alex, I came across this discussion:
https://bbs.astronomy-imaging-camera...siair-pro-plus
It may help.

Thanks Peter that very helpful.
Today my daughter finished the new computer ..everything from hardware to software but also added emulating software and put the Asiair app on the computer (it thinks it is a phone) so I should be able to have a huge screen instead of the Mobil phone which will be great for reviewing incoming so subs...and subject to testing I think we can make my dream come true.
Thanks to everyone who helped both here and via messages.
Alex

I wonder if a router in the observatory and hardwire each ASIair to the router might be the best way to go? that way you only need to connect to a single wifi network, and it should be pretty seamless switching between devices? you might even be able to open multiple instances of the emulation app and control all 3 at once.

Ontop of that, i've found that the inbuilt station mode on my Air Plus can be quite spotty due to physical interference from the equipment coming between it and my home wifi as the scope slew around.

Thanks very much Josh for helping out and every bit of input is greatly appreciated.
The computer is being set up today in my van but I still have to set up the Asiair on the 115mm ( and the rig in general) and place the eq5 and 80mm on its new pier set up as I have been waiting for the concrete to cure..its Asiair is still in the box as is its EAF...so testing any day now and no doubt I will be back to report issues or hopefully that everything works perfect

Update..computer is in and talks to Asiair number one.(note what is one screen)..just that makes me very very happy

Hi Alex,

You absolutely can use three ASIAIR Plus’ at the same time from the one device.

When you’ve set each of them up, change the name of each of them (I identify each by having named them after the scope they’re on). In each of their wifi settings, turn Station Mode ON. That way, they’re each recognised on your device whilst connected to your home wifi network (rather than having to log into each of their remote wifi networks). It also allows you to control them from wherever in your house your device is able to connect to your wifi, rather than having to be within a particular distance to the ASIAIR itself. I have a mesh network setup at home and can literally control the scope in the yard from anywhere on my property.

I have five ASIAIR Plus’ (not that I use them all at the same time), but have tested switching between each in the app and it worked perfectly. Closing the app (or switching between devices) doesn’t disrupt the session. Once you’ve hit the GO button on your session, it travels along nicely regardless of whether you have the app open or not.

Hope this helps. Shout out if you need help setting them all up.

Cheers,
Joves

Thank you very much for your very helpful input Joves I appreciate every piece of information about getting all this to work remotely as it will extend my imaging life.

For a start I can tell them what to do and sleep a little..at least not have to drive back and forth during the night..Heck just the saving in mower fuel will be significant..
.
I had in mind naming each Asiair after the scope..RASA, 115 and 80 before I realised it may not even be doable jbut t it has all worked out thanks to everyones help.

These large monitors may bite me as I expect I will notice flaws in my images that one would not notice on the lap top...anyways can a only be a good thing.

Still much to do...I don't know if I mentioned it because today has been a blur but the "security" camera arrived and I picked it up this after noon but like many other things I have yet to set it up..the idea is I can check on things from the van if it works the way I hope..but I think I now have everything hardware wise to do it all..I still have to learn the Arduino thing so as to remote control the roof..the wheels turned up at the place they were sent for some fine machining so I must nail the cabling real soon.

Thanks again.

Alex

It may be a simple answer but I don't know it...how do you rename the Asiairs.. I have the three running now and under control but I could not work out the simple name change...

Start writing your PHD thesis Alex. Is this setup controlling all the other automation, like your observatory roof, the coffee machine, and your electric blanket?

PHD...guiding?..

No coffee machine, and certainly no electric blanket...but certainly observatory wise I am very happy now that I can easily manage all three scopes from the van and having the two security cameras stops me worrying and going down there every ten minutes...

But I still don't know how to rename the Asiairs.
