Cluster in Scorpius!

Hi again all

My favourate cluster in Scopius ! and only 6200 LY away!geez...right next door don't ya think ?

Well,I dont't think you would get much of an argument If you were to make the claim that NGC 6231 is one of the most stunning open clusters in the heavens.

For those who have never viewed this cluster look It up in the top of the tail at about half a deg North of Zeta Scorpii...your in for a treat !

Again this was shot a couple of months back out at Magellan Observatory at Lake Bathurt N.S.W.(3 hours South of Sydney)

Shot through the ZS110/.8 reducer with the SXV-H9C on a AP600E mount.

Exposures were 2 minutes unguided and all pre-processing done in AA3 and post-processing with CS2.

one of my favourite clusters Louie- I think -if I remember correctly-its also known as the Northern Jewel Box and a true rival to NGC 4755

its great you shoot objects that are not run off the mill!

Nice cluster Louie - not too sure about the deep red stars throughout the image though.

It is a stunning open cluster Louie and your image shows it beautifully, makes one want to revisit for another look.

My site is just an image gallery at the moment so I have a lot of work do to get some info up on all those shots but there just never seems to be enough time...don't know how the Iceman gets through everything he has to do and still spend time with his family.

Andrew,I'm not sure If I've heard It refered as that because you seem to spark a vague memory,but I can see by the flatness of the asterism in that area why It would be! thanks for bringing that to my attention.
The Scorpius/Sagittarius region is one of my favourate areas to visit this time of year full of exciting objects to discover or revisit....never gets boring !
