Leon,
My wife attaches the image(s) to an email which she sends to herself.
The email and attachments are then opened (and saved) on the laptop.

I have to admit, it's one of the more frustrating aspects of iPhones.
You've got a few options, other than email.
1. Cloud backup. Use OneDrive or iCloud. Back your photos up to the cloud. Then download onto your PC. I've got this method running automatically (OneDrive)
2. Try iTunes. Good luck. It's crap.
3. Get CopyTrans. I use it, and it copied all my pics across no problem.

Works perfectly. Only thing you have to do once is select trust this computer on your phone.
Once your computer is trusted on your phone you will see your phone in Windows Explorer. You can manually copy from the Phone folders to Windows or let window run it’s own import app which it will want to do. It works well if you choose either option.

It will fail if you haven’t told your Apple device to trust this computer. The message will pop up on your device when you first plug in the cord. If you don’t see this message try unlocking your device and reconnect the cord. If it still doesn’t connect after saying yes to trust, reconnect one more time. By reconnect I mean pull out the cord and put it back in. Once trusted you will not have to answer that question again on a given computer.
The phone with show up in Windows Explorer as Apple iPhone under This PC on the left hand side. If you expand the path on the left you will see a drive icon called Internal Storage and under it a folder called DCIM and under it a folder called 100APPLE and another called 100CLOUD. Your photos are in these two folders. If you do not see anything then your device has not yet been trusted or there is an issue with the USB port or cable.

Ha yeah I know. My computer is trusted. Thanks be always found that it transfers about 10 images then fails. And I have to start again. Just not reliable for me. Different cables, different USB ports, same outcome

Maybe update iTunes to the latest version. Although Windows 10 has a direct connection to your iPhone via USB to lightning cable and iTunes is not even used, updating iTunes may update certain drivers required to connect. Keep windows 10 updated too.
Not sure what else to suggest. I've not had any issues other than an intermittent fault on one of my USB ports on an older notebook running the latest Windows 10. Anything connected drops off at random and I traced it to a bad connection since moving the connected device or cable causes Windows to respond.
Perhaps the OP wont have any issues also when he connects directly.

Hey Adam I did have a look at Copy Trans Photo, and have to say that worked a treat, thank you for that.
And of coarse many thanks to all would suggested different ideas.

hi leon,
the way i do it is through the app Telegram. You can save messages to a saved folder. Telegram also work on PC so if you save a file on your phone to telegram (saved messages) it will appear when you go to the Telegram on the PC. It is much easier than email as you can send large files.

If connecting by cord then whether using Windows’ own ‘Photos’ app or any other program to transfer files, Windows still needs to connect and recognise the device and once it does it will show in Windows Explorer as Apple iPhone.
I thought Nikolas’ advice was simple, straight to the point and free.
I have Copy Trans but have not renewed (required every 2 years). It’s not expensive and has a lot of other features if you get the whole suite but it’s not essential to have just to copy photos from your device.
You could use Adobe Bridge which has some powerful renaming features and is free. I personally use Lightroom 6 (last pre subscription version) as I like to rename and catalogue my photos and videos. Whichever version I use I first need an established connection via the cord which is as easy as plugging the two devices together and answering trust on you mobile device. Couldn’t be simpler.
Note you don’t need any other third party software as the integral Windows 10 ‘Photos’ app is more than capable and starts up by default if you haven’t changed the auto-play settings. It has collection and album features and if I didn’t have Lightroom I’d probably just use it or Adobe Bridge.
You can also connect your device and then right click on Apple iPhone in Windows Explorer and select ‘Import pictures and videos’. This uses a different integral Windows app and you can set separate folders for pictures and videos as well as other import settings if you click on more options.

Thank you for your suggestions, I will explore that avenue, but please understand I am from the old school and I phones to me are unimportant to me, and I am just doing this for my wife (Alice) I don't even have a single photo on my ancient Iphone.
Thanks however for your kind support and help.
