Really bad seeing

Got up at 2 this morning.

Had the scope out all night. Transparency was great but wow! Was anyone else out to gauge the seeing?

I reckon it's the worse I've ever seen, and I've seen some rubbish over the last few years.

I wouldn't have put it at much better than 1.5-2/10.

Fingers crossed for the jetstream to nick off in time for the weekend.

I haven't imaged in what seems like weeks

yup i was out in it. unfortunately i didnt have your transparency tho... it went from 1-4/10.
as for gauging the seeing i'd go as low as 2-3/10 (ie shocking)

Well i'm glad you said that. I went out and looked up, at about 9pm and although it was clearing (was cloudy all day) I decided not to set the scope up because a) I was too tired, and b) the stars were twinkling and the jetstream looked bad.

It was beautiful and clear this morning at 5:20am when I got in the car and I *almost* regretted not getting up, but if the seeing was as bad as you say, i'll do a happy dance jig that I got some extra sleep

Transparency is how "clear" the sky is. Bad transparency can mean clouds, but even if the sky is clear, it might not be very dark or clear due to haze, fog, dust in the atmosphere, etc.

Seeing is how "steady" the sky is, and is affected by altitude, jetstream, local winds and weather patterns.

If the seeing is good, the image in the eyepiece stays steady and you can see fine details. If the seeing is bad, it wobbles and jellows about and you can't make out fine details.

The shift over the last few weeks has been obvious.. the good seeing of Mar/Apr appears to be gone.

Huge jetstream for the last few days and more for the next week or so by the looks of it..

and clear skies for the next week as well, just to rub it in.

Great transparency here in south-western Sydney - and clear from horizon to horizon right now. A bit wobbly up there, but generally OK.

Same here, just too tired to set up the gear tonight.
