Another school talk

I have been asked to lectures at Rocky school on Friday to the kids about astronomy. This will be the secound school now i have lectured to. Plus i had to talk at a camera group the other night about the photos we take of the sky and how we take then. Not much of a talker but people keep asking me to talk about astronomy. I guess its ok because the kids get to see some astronomy stuff. They love it. What do you guys and girl think about talking at schools and in public. Have you done it and how did you go.

Go for it Phil. Its a bit unerving at first but when you start to find out how interested most folks are in astronomy it gets much better. I used to help out at the Astronomical Society of The Southwest in Bunbury WA when school and community groups came around and it was great fun. I don't have a great knowledge of the skies, but if someone asked a question I couldnt answer i'd just point them to someone who could. But it is surprising how much comes back to you when the right question is asked.

Definately go for it Phil. I started doing open nights at the Mapleton School Observatory and ended up doing beginners courses and introductory imaging classes. It is great fun.

I wish someone had come to my school... my only regret in life is the years I was not into astronomy. So few years left and so much to see and learn about.

You haven't said what age group or school year or numbers of students, but if they are primary age and only a couple of dozen then get them involved.

Even if you only use a couple of students for a demonstration (like using three student and a torch and a white soccer/net ball to explain the phases of the moon. Takes a bit of careful planning but it is a great one) it gets them all involved.
