Most books written about the history of the telescope mention the Hans Lippershey built a telescope and that Galileo heard about it and its design and proceeded to make several versions of the telescope over the ensuing years and gets most of the credit for the invention.

There is more to this story. Thomas Harriot was also using telescopes to observe the heavens around the same time.

No doubt there’s a story about an early telescope supporter called Thomas Peeper who lived next to a girls grammar school.
