Dune and Other Movies

Finally got around to seeing Dune. The visual effects, CGI were incredible and this time my attention was focused for the entire movie compared to when I tried to watch the 1984 version. I didn't realise this was part 1 of a two part story .. so have to wait at least a year for the second concluding part.

Matrix Resurrections ... think I will give this a mis .. new actors are replacing Agent Smith and Morpheus and the trailer makes me think meh..

Ghostbusters Afterlife ... wasn't overly impressed by the trailers shown on the TV but the extended trailer shown during Dune has sparked my interest. Looks like a far better attempt at a sequel than that dismal 2016 remake.

2023 will see the release of Christopher Nolan movie 'Oppenheimer' The story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer ... not sure about that casting choice .. will have to wait and see how this plays out.

I forgot to tell my wife that Dune was a 2 part movie. Got to the end and she's like WTF?? oops. I really enjoyed it. This is what the movie should have been in '84. Hopefully they won't put the wierding module in part 2 - that sucked.

Same here for Dune. When I saw "part one" on the screen my inner voice uttered some French explicits...

The Matrix was ok. Felt a little like a high school reunion from the 90s though. Same story, older crowd. I'll have to watch it again and not sleep through it though. I went to the 20:50 session Wednesday night straight off a 5 day 2000km road trip. I was "ripe".

There is an interview with Brian Cox on YouTube about Don't Look Up.

Dune- I enjoyed but wish they had finished the story…hope it continues
Matrix - a movie that did not need to be made. It was interesting but I wish the whole cast had come back…
Don’t Look Up - made me sad…to much on the nose and much too close to a segment of our population
Spider-Man - for fans of the franchise was a treat. Sets the stage for a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe opportunities and in my opinion moves comic book sensibility closer to film.

I'm a long term Dune fan. Read the book when I was 17 and have since read ALL of the sequels & prequels. It really helps to have read the book

I was at the premier of the 1984 movie - but was slightly concerned when the ushers were handing out synopsis sheet to us all pre movie!
(Many followers sadly know that due to the producers insistence on a 2hr 13 min release, over 7 hrs of David Lynch's movie ended up on the cutting room floor!)

Anyone keen to see the best available recut of this film should view the 3hr Spicediver edit on youtube.

So I attended the latest version with high hopes, also being a huge fan on Denis Villeneuve's work on Arrival and Blade Runner 2049.

Frankly IMO it is a masterpiece of epic cinema on a grand "Laurence of Arabia" scale, deserving of whatever hollywood awards it may receive. Incredible score, great cast and very cool effects.

Those worried about it being a two part story have to accept that Frank Herbert's vision of the "Duniverse" is far too complex to be just one movie - (hence the box office failure of the 1984 version).

Fortunately we will see Pt2 in Oct 2023, and quite likely a third movie to follow based on the second book of the series.

Fun fact: George Lucas "borrowed" 41 ideas from Dune for Star Wars...

Producers just do not appreciate the works of the writers. Just look at the back story to LOTR and the pressure put on Peter Jackson to condense a book trilogy into a single movie which in turn turned into a two movie idea. Thankfully Miramax allowed Jackson shop LOTR to other studios and New Line Cinema took on the project, and even suggested to Jackson that he turn his two-movie project into a trilogy. Oh the Irony.

Getting back to Dune I am surprised that they did not film this back to back and this runs the risk of the story being disjointed. I am a huge fan of Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, Blackhawk Down) but he completely stuffed the Prometheus story with that garbage Alien Covenant.

The only issue I have with this latest release of Dune is that I think I might have to go and read the book.

Back in around 1985 or 86, Frank Herbert was over here and being interviewed on the radio, as I was driving. He was asked what he thought of Dune the movie.

He responded that when he saw it, he thought it was pretty good ..... but that the version he saw was four hours and fifty one minutes long. However, he thought the theatrical release at just over two hours was too badly cut up.

Later I read that they actually had ten hours of film from the first movie, and that they were thinking of putting it out as a mini-series. Sadly it never happened.
Regards,
Renato

I really hope there is. Dune Part 2 , read some mixed news that it was not going ahead. Hope it does. I liked the originals music score. I have seen all the other versions that have come out since the current movie is by far the best so I really hope part 2 happens. Anyone here also like Asimov Foundation? I have only watched the first few episodes has been good. Also wheel of time , not sure about the edits and changes to story. I was a bit confused thinking maybe my memory of reading it was wrong. But it seems they have altered it.

I would really like to also see Raymond E Feist Magician or David Eddings Belgarid on screen too. It’s great to see the books of my youth come to screen.
