Metallic Paint on cars

I guess I only notice the bad paint jobs but it seems metallic paint on a car is not a good idea as so many that I notice the paint is real crook early on.

I am thinking of getting a car ( ICE but only a little motor) and it has metallic paint which worries me...

Does it go bad fast or is it just my imagination.

I know if you egg a metallic car that's the paint gone... but Halloween has just past.

Depends on how long the manufacturer has been exposed to Australian conditions...

No Alex it dose not go bad quickly if you look after it it will last as long as any other car two pack paint.

The problem usually comes after repairs and certain areas need to be resprayed.

Also the clear coat that they finish it with has to be of high quality otherwise one will see it peel away in time.

I certainly hope this car wont be getting repaired ever...but thanks your advice is very welcome..I hope to have a test drive tomorrow...I wont take my walking frame so as not to worry them but I really should use my stick ...it is all about being able to get in and out really... How far can you drive on a test drive? I dont want just around the block plus maybe a bit of drifting ... and what is the top speed and how long to get there?

Anyways probably a short first test drive and come back in a weeks time for a decent test...should I produce my bank statement to show I am worth more than the impression I give?

Anyways first see if I can climb into it...Mazda mx5 small motor auto.. an old mans sports car I know that but its rear wheel drive and 50/50 weight distribution so it should handle decent...small motor does not concern me I am done at 140 150 anyways and that would be infrequent.

It's the clear coat as Leon points out that is usually the culprit. Mitsubishi for example obviously use a clear not suitable for Australian conditions, as I see a significant proportion of Mitsubishi's with terribly peeling clear coats, irrespective of base colour. Holden also seems to have had some bad clear coat supply.

Regular paint care takes care of most problems. A regular waxing will protect car duco well.

Thanks gentlemen.
I feel confident and very much looking forward to my test "sit".
If I get it I will need to build a shed for it and level the drive ...I should seal the drive but that would cost a fortune...it would prevent me getting bogged in wet times ... I only now thought about that...its a lot of resourses for a toy but heck if I like the thing I am getting it...crook paint or not...and really time is running out which ever way one looks at it..I may be totally cripple in under 12 months or even totally dead and given the absolute suffering since early this year I dont feel guilty spending my money...the estate will get something back when its sold..like the astro gear there is still something left..not like a world trip where it all disappears and I live in a caravan for goodness sake.

Alex, I see many cars, which have been left to sit in the sun, which have degraded clear coats. Most cars have clear coat now, it used to be mainly metallic colours, but everything is clear coated now. Some Euro cars are known for early clear coat degrading, like Alfas. Clear coat can be repaired, Utube is full of hints on spot repairs of clear coat.
If you like the car, I would not let a damaged clear coat stop you. Although it may indicate a previous owner was not considerate of general wear and tear of the vehicle, which may extend to mechanical condition as well.
As to the garage, it is always a nice thing to have, and extends vehicle life and appearance significantly, it also provides a great workshop for repairs etc. Consider your mobility issues, if your considering working on the car yourself. I know myself that working on my car has been getting increasingly difficult in my 70s, and just getting up off the ground can be a struggle. This was a big factor in my selling of my old Jeep.

It was s demonstrater and as new but when only 400 mts away the guy rings and says it was sold..me being a cynical person suspect that it never was for sale as he went straight into we can build one the way you want speel..."sorry I don't have that time available" and told him why... silence
What surprised me was my daughter said "that sucks" in a supportive way that I did not expect at all...

You know what they say about no pictures...

Nice one, year? 1.6? good idea to go with "go faster red" as well imo, though I do like the Mazda blue.

Well I did put one up but you could see the number plate so I took it down .I edited one to hide the number plate but I have been so busy I have not had time to post.
Busy day bought the car and a cheap printer so I can print out Martin's (Startrek) notes finally and hopefully start learning something...but the bonanza was Tabulam Post Office where I picked up 4 parcels...I usually open them as soon as I get to the car but I left my knife at home..after I recover, just walked in, I will see what has arrived...and hopefully I can upload a photo now of the red car. It is a beauty..I got the 2 litre so I can tow a caravan

It is "Soul Red" which does not make me happy given I think it hints at ancient superstition dating back to ancient Egypt and their Book of the Dead..I think thats the first mention of it...anyways its red and not metallicbred..

I think that I did exceptionally well and although full price seemed great I needed to see just how much I could negotiate off the asking price...and it went back and forth ..I think $x is reasonable so could you do that? ..No $y is the best..Mmm I could come up a couple of hundred..OK let me run the numbers again..so she goes to the computer and says "I can do $z but thats our break even" and being such a softy I said ok .. she said again that she gave it to me at cost..I would like to believe that but I dont entirely..we did hit it off very well..I got her talking about her life etc and I show genuine interest actually..so I called back later and gave her a nice big bunch of flowers, she went a little teary and asked if she could give me a hug.. ordinarily I never permit such familiarity but I gave in and even hugged her back...I guess used car dealers dont get people giving them flowers.
So I get it on Wednesday and hope it is half as good as it looks..
