90's Computer Games

Rummaging around in a few old boxes I came across a couple of computer games, Doom and Descent, I religiously played when I had my 486 DX4 100. Can these still be played or are they destined for land fill. Yeah, I know graphics would be stone age compared to today but these games were great for their time.

Doom, shadow warrior, rise of the triad. All excellent games.

Try DosBox. It is an x86 emulator. I use it to run Dance of the Planets.
DOS games I remember are Wolfenstein (original), Gorbi, Lemmings, Captain Comic, Myst, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, Red Baron, Microsoft Flight Simulator 5. Didn’t really like Doom or the revived Wolfenstein.

DosBox, I used that a lot...

Processing speed is a biggie as some games used to be tied to the clock speeds. I remember reloading A-10 warthog onto a new PC and was wrapping around the playing map about every 20secs or so... hypersonic speeds...

Loved playing Privateer II well past its expiry date with DosBox, same for the Star Wars and X-Wing releases.

I really don't mean to hijack this thread, but I thought that it might attract
some comp knowledgeable members, so can anyone tell me if my old Acuter digital imager from out of the ark, could be made to work. In XP it would
display a still image, but would not do video.

Doom is a game for all time. At least in 90-s we've played this game a lot. After job, school, universities. Everyone used to be a fan of this game. To be honest I am still to this day...

There was another game I played on the old 486 ... Scorched Earth .. very basic graphics but somewhat addictive. When I got a Pentium I loaded it to play and it was a blink and you missed it experience.

Also use to have a all night Command & Conquer sessions with some mates. Tried playing Warcraft but I really sucked at it ... you always had to keep an eye on your workforce.

Paradroid and marble madness...

And yes to DOOM, going from 2d Wolfenstein to 1st player doom was huge in the day...

Keep thinking marble madness would make a great comeback on the phones with the tilt actions, but haven't seen anything similar yet.


Apparently you can still get Ti 486 chips and motherboards... be a very expensive gaming unit to build now though. Twice the price and about a 250th of the performance.

Apple II, Apple IIe, ZX Spectrum, then the all conquering "more memory than you'll ever need" C64... history...

You can just buy the original DOOM games on Steam for a few bucks that plays on modern hardware. Much better than playing with emulators.

I’ll check later but you should be able to get it on other PC stores like Bethesda’s launcher and even the Microsoft Store.

But the new DOOM games are amazing. DOOM Eternal is sooooo much fun.

I saw my first computer game when I was 14 yrs.
At the Museum in Ultimo..half a room of computer that you could play 0s and Xs...a wonder to behold.

When I first meet a computer, not a PC, it was Duntroon. The game was a thing called "Hunt the Wampus" and programs still came ran via shoeboxes full of punched cards.

But that was a state of the arts military training base....

You should watch the Netflix show "High Score" in which they interview the people involved in making Doom.

Doom and Duke Nukem were pretty popular on SNES.

Depends on what you have, some of those old games are fetching a pretty penny. Do some research before you bin them.

DOOM 2 (not DOOM) is on the Microsoft Store but for Xbox.
So it's Steam or Bethesda for PC for the originals.
