Jupiter - wavelet comparison

I've processed this Jupiter from earlier this morning with a little heavier wavelets than the 2 prior images I've already posted.

I've not cranked it by a huge amount. Just enough to sharpen it a little more than has become my custom of late.

I'd appreciate your comments as to whether you find these wavelet settings more appealing than the softer schemes I've been using?

I appreciate that the harder the wavelets the more artefacts (onions etc) are introduced into an image.

I'm more after your opinions whether the 'new' scheme is producing an improved image overall.

I'll attach the others from this morning for comparison.

Many thanks.

Hi Matt. The middle image is the most pleasing to me - good compromise between detail and smoothness. The onion rings near the limb in the left image really do detract although there's a lot of interest in the rest of the image.

BTW you're really doing great stuff at the moment.

Thanks, Graeme.

Appreciate the feedback/ comments.

For a bit of an experiment I processed another AVI and performed a Mitchell 1.5x resample on the Final page.

Here's the original and the resample.

The seeing must have been quite OK for this AVI. There's discernible detail in GRS, even at the limb.

The Deep red feature in the SEB close to transiting the CM is also very interesting. Was very pronoucned on the lappy screen during capture.

great images Matt, some of your best this season I would say.

Seems like you are doing the right thing, you are processing for the conditions. I find that the better the conditions the more you can push the wavelets. As well, if you do the R, G, B split and then process individually and re-combine you can further adjust the image to suit the seeing conditions starting with the wavelets. In my case, it's the blue channel and the level of wavelets I can do before artifacts become introduced that can signify how good the conditions were and how much I can push the wavelets.

sooooo hard to tell in a sense.............

it is always a toss up......we are looking at clouds after all and smoothness should technically be the final finish so to speak, but then we can miss out on detail...........

I think all are good, you pick your personal style and go from there.

I actually like the 1.5x one the best of the lot. There's loads of interesting features and it doesn't look too processed to me. Nice saturated, deep colours.

I'd reckon the seeing was pretty good (at least 7/10) to get that image, based on your previous postings over the last few weeks. There's great, fine detail.

You're really hitting your straps this season Matt. Get that DMK cranking! You'll be producing amazing stuff.

Thanks DP, John and Mike.

Your kind words are very much appreciated

As you guys know it's a lot of time at the scope, cam, lappy etc to produce images which start to look the way you want them. So, this season has been immensely satisfying and rewarding.

I also feel blessed that Canberra's turned on some decent conditions this year.

Seems like we've had a great Autumn. March and April seem like a bit of a 'sweet zone' for conditions here.

Best enjoy it before winter arrives

Good stuff Matt, they're all great images. I was out at Murrumbateman thismorning as well, but got fogged in so bad I had to give it away, and almost needed the white stick to drive home - it was very thick out there!

Matt, I don't know much, but I know what I like, and as far as an image is concerned, the middle image seems to be the best. To me is seems sharper, the type of sharpness you get when you ramp up the contrast. Having said that, I can tell you that I would be proud to own any one of them
