I read it's an unusual event that high up the coast? Is that true that New York is a very low near sea level?

Yes, parts of New York and the Northeast is right along the water like many harbor cities.

While hurricanes can and do hit this part of the country the path of this storm was different (as noted in the news). We were lucky that the wind speeds were not so high but the storm did drop a lot of rain in a short time.

All this water is sorely needed on the west coast. Cruel irony.
