Focus motor for WO Type 2

Hi Folks,
I managed to setup a focus motor for my WO GT81 with it's type 2 focusser. Between Rigel Systems and myself we designed a wheel to fit the focus knob, but I had to drill & tap the knob to put a grub screw in, as the original hole is hidden by the bearing. They tell me WO has had many requests for a remote control.
Works great from my Macbook pro too!

That is very nicely done. Question time:
  • I think stepper motors are measured in degrees. How sensitive is the stepper motor in your rig?

Hi Stu,
Mine is one of their DC motors driven by a PWM signal, not a stepper motor. I goes from amazingly fast to so slow you can hardly see the fine focus knob moving.

I have put the same motor focus on my 6" f8 frac and it's a long way ahead of using the fine focus knob on the GSO linear bearing focuser, but I had to glue the gear wheel to the knob... it just spun around otherwise. The other choice was to drill a hole into the knob and put in a self tapping screw to hold the gear wheel in place. I get zero focusing wobble now Very happy with it.

Just taken delivery of a WO GT81.
This scope is none DDG.
Will this focus system work with the rack and pinion on my scope?

John

PS from looking at my focuser and comparing it looks similar.

Hi John,
If the large knob looks similar, it will work on your scope. Mine is a rack and pinion also. Read the tutorial and make sure the inside of the knob is the same shape as it goes though the bearing. If it is, just measure the diameter of the knob at that point and let the folks know this size as you order the kit. Include my name so they know which one you're talking about. Good luck. Hi Danny,

Thanks for the info. Rigel Systems have sent me some dimensions and they match my focuser. I mentioned your name.
Will probably wait till after Christmas before I order.

John
