Recommend a good DAW Interface?

Muso's, I am looking for a cost effect DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) Interface box for my home music studio build. I have been using a Zoom R8 for recording, mixing, etc but it' lacks some of the features of DAW software on PCs. Like to keep the cost below $200, and buy from an Aus supplier.

And anything that comes with the PC software bundled is worth considering, even if it is just Lite versions. Thanks.

Hi Glen,

It depends on what you want to do.

If you want to record live on multiple tracks > 2 at the same time you will need to buy an interface that can support that and these are not going to work with your budget as they cost somewhere between $600 - $2000+.

If you are only recording live with a maximum of 2 tracks then you already have what you need in hardware as your R8 has a 2 channel USB PC interface built in which a software DAW will be able to see and use. You can record on 2 tracks at a time, then rewind and record the next 2 tracks...etc.

As for software, I use a fantastic product by Presonus called Studo One, this is not cheap for the pro version, however there is a free version on their website called Studio One Prime:

https://shop.presonus.com/Studio-One-5-Prime

I have not used this but as I use the paid for version and love it, I would think this would be very good.

I have found in 35 years of recording that in most cases you have to pay a reasonable amount for quality software and hardware full stop, I've tried all the shortcuts but they fail you in some ways or another.

There is also free 'Audacity' software that lets you record 2 tracks at a time but then you can rewind and record the next 2 tracks...repeat. This is also good for tapping into live music feeds/streams and recording to hard disk on the fly.

Again, if you only record 2 tracks at the same time, (which is all the R8 can do anyhow when connected to the PC), and get some free software, mentioned, then you won't need to spend anything!
However if you want to record more than 2 tracks at the same time then be prepared to fork out the dollars. Just like telescopes I guess.

More than happy to chat in more detail as it's not a simple topic depending on what you want to do.

Cheers,
Damien.

Here are some PC interfaces that are at the cheaper range and are multitrack. Do some detailed research on the one you want to ensure it has the features you need. Anything above 4 real output channels via USB will be more expensive and generally for quality over $1000.

The websites are just for reference, I did not do any price matching.

Behringer UMC404HD U-Phoria 4×4 Audio Interface $239

PreSonus Studio 68c 6x6 USB-C Interface w/ Studio One Artist & Ableton Live Lite $549

MOTU M4 4-in/4-out USB Audio Interface with Studio-Quality Sound $386

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 Gen 3 18-in/8-out USB Audio Interface $899

Depends if you have experience with any of the major DAWs too and what your preference is. Just having a quick look at Amazon you're probably looking at $225 - $275 for a decent 2 in 2 out USB interface (something like Presonus or Focusrite Scarlet).

I've played with a few DAWs and find Reaper pretty amazing bang for buck. Only an amateur hack keyboard player with a midi keyboard and Roland Digital Piano plugged in, but with a decent interface so many effects and instruments you can do in software.

What do you play, and what will you listen through?

I'd confidently 2nd Damien's recommendation of the "Behringer UMC404HD U-Phoria 4×4 Audio Interface $239"

Whilst I haven't used them in the context of music production, I've used them in over 20 ZoomRoom installs in the last 2 years. Stable and resilient in 24/7 situations, and feed the PC a very clear sample of whatever mic we installed.

There's a Focusrite Scarlet Gen 3, 2 input model that's just as good, but no cheaper.

These used to be cheaper and more available, but many Zoom Rooms (and other VC ecosystems) sorta stripped the shelves, so to speak during the remote learning craze. Sorry about that...

I'd have to also agree that the Behringer UMC404HD is an excellent choice if you are OK with 4 inputs. If you only want 2 inputs there is a 2 channel version too. The Equivalent Input Noise amongst other audio parameters is excellent even compared with some top end brands.

Some detail here....

Hi Glen,

I just installed the Presonus Studio One Prime (Free ver) on one of my PC's and its seems pretty good. There is no limit on number of tracks, no limit on memory. Can only use its effects which are pretty good, no VST etc.

So for what you need to do, it looks good. Time will tell if it does not have a feature you need but it's got a lot for a freeby. Besides I use its bigger brother and it really is great software.

Tip: Once you have added a few tracks, click on the 'View' Menu, then select Console. That way you get a track view and wave view. The track view is very handy for dragging effects onto and setting the channel audio inputs as well as the master audio output.

As with all DAW's, each one is different and take a little while to get used to, but this seems to be more intuitive and easy to pickup. There are heaps of great tutorials available too.
There is also plenty of addins to download for it too, free. Over 1 GB..

Cheers,
Damien.

Another thing is you have to initially have your PC online as the software needs to be registered. You can register up to 5 PC's as well.

Sounds like you've got lots of diverse interests and music skills. Hope it all comes together Glen.

Might be worth trawling some dedicated music and DAW sites too once you have a plan of action. Hopefully check with others before spending any dollars.
