my Favourite DVD has died I think

hi Guys, i have a favorite DVD that I play occasionally, however yesterday it started OK but a little further up the track it stopped and just sat there at the same scene.

Then it would start again and once again stop intermittently.

So the question is this is it just worn out of is there a magic fix.

You need to wash the disk and can even use non whitening toothpaste to fix minor scratches. Then make a copy if possible

you can buy a 'lens cleaning disc', essentially it's a cd/dvd with a small brush element on it.

You might need to google where you can buy one these days... I bought one decades ago at a hifi store...

Stream it. It's what all the cool kids do these days.
I have a book case full of DVDs, none of which are ever touched now.
You can probably throw out the eight track tapes too.

How ' old ' is the DVD ....over an extended period of time, DVD's can suffer from ' disc rot ' .... so the data can become corrupt.
The DVD might look OK, but will otherwise cease to play properly.

Do other DVDs play ok. ? The laser can break down. . DVD hire shops have polishing machines to keep the DVD scratch free and provide a longer life. Perhaps they would polish your DVD for you.

Truly? This is new to me. Are there any reference articles on this, sounds like something I need to look into a little.

Hi Leon,
a note for you and everyone else.

Don't ever open a DVD or CD player up with the power on.
The infrared laser is easily powerful enough to damage your eyes.
Not only that - you can't see infrared so you won't even know
that it could be shining into & damaging your eyes.
People who service them live - use special anti-infra red goggles.


With the power off you could clean the laser with
a cotton wool bud & alcohol.
Sometimes it can be just a wad of dust that has built up over the laser.


The most likely cause of failure is a scratch on the CD or DVD
that you've inserted into the machine.

Search for and download DVD Decrypter.

Copy the DVD to your hard drive - quite often computer DVD readers can do a better job of reading a DVD than a player. If there are errors because something is wrong in part of the disc, click ignore errors.

Download DVD Shrink 3.2. Then shrink the copy on the hard drive, and burn it to a single layer DVD.

Hopefully, that will then work in your DVD player.

If there are no errors copying the DVD to hard drive with DVD Decrypter, you could just burn that image to a dual-layer DVD, using programs like "Image Burn".

I've also had a the problem where a store bought DVD plays perfectly in my old DVD players, but starts getting stuck in a Blu-Ray player, where other DVDs play perfectly.

This is true. I purchased a DVD a year or two ago that wouldn't play properly. I took it back to the store (Sanity, for what it's worth) and and they found three or four faint scratches near the rim of the DVD on the playing surface. They replaced it with no fuss, but those three or four thinner-than-a-hair scratches caused it to malfunction.

Nik, a disc that wont work anymore however, however I have come across a copy of it and all is well again.
